    Lewis was 308 years old.

Of course he was falling apart.

    Vitali should rematch Hide.

He was losing on all three scorecards before the finish.

    Hide won the event.

    nah.

It proves people are so ******ed that they listen to Jim ****ing Lampley.

I did not even realise that this "Vitali won the event" thing until I heard the US commentary.

Jim was the first to say it and everyone and their Grandmother copied it, like they were the first to say it.

Dunno. What would have happened if McCall had missed with his straight right against Lewis years earlier?

What would have happened if Bruno had ducked under Lewis' left hook years ago in England?

Nobody intentionally opens a cut, but Lewis was told by Steward at the end of the second round to fight rough, forget boxing, and just hit Vitaly as hard as he could with every shot. Four rounds later and the fight is over. That tells me all I need to know.

A 38 year old Lewis would never get in tip top shape. I think his knees were ****ed by then, and he did little (or no) running around then.

And he was clearly fighting for easy paydays. Why do you think he was slated to fight Kirk Johnson?

A fight that was judged such a mismatch, the WBC were reluctant to sanction it as a title fight.
(Though surprisingly they had no problems throwing Kirk in an eliminator fight against Vitaly. Nice move by them to guarantee a Vitaly rematch if Lewis wanted to keep fighing)

How much more decisive do you want? One guys face is torn apart, and he's eating massive uppercuts at the end of the 6th. It's not like it was a bad cut, but Vitaly had Lewis in the corner wailing away. He was eating right hands.

He showed a huge amount of chin and heart to keep going, but Jesus, just how much more punishment do you want someone to take?

Because it's not fair. Don't you know Lewis was supposed to keep fighting through his late 30's and early 40's until he eventually lost to either Vitaly or Wlad.

This is one of the more stupid arguments in recent boxing time. Though i haven't seen anyone credible place much emphasis on the Vitali side of the argument.

An old, out of shape Lewis went into a fight severely underrating his opponent, who turned out to be one of the next dominant champions, and did just enough to get out of their with the win. Cuts by punches are as valid as wobbling someone with a punch, or running them out of stamina with pressure and volume.

People talk about the fight as though Vitali's injuries weren't the result of Lewis being effective in what he did. It was one of the worst cuts you will see, and it happened because Vitali was very hittable, and even an old Lewis hit like a truck.

The fight says all you need to know about the class gap between the two, and it also says a lot that it is arguably the highlight of Vitali's career.

Its no use saying "what if the fight went on", because the cuts would have only got far worse. You might as well be saying what if Lewis didn't land all of his best punches in the fight, then Vitali might have won.

It's a stupid argument you are making because you can't predict a cut. Lewis was lucky to cut him otherwise he would have lost that fight. That's why everyone wanted to see the rematch. I don't blame Lewis for not taking it but he did duck Vitali.

Well we do know a couple of things.

One is that Lewis would have kept going after that eye, that's for damn sure, perhaps to the point of causing permanent damage, and two, there's a good chance going forward both of them would have been leaning on each other, much like the 6th round, and that likely would have set up more upper cuts by Lewis. If nothing else, Lewis had a huge edge in ring smarts and he would have used it to the max.
