It seems many people take this Champion for granted.

I have been hard pressed to see anyone beating him easily or even at all, from a pool of ATG Heavies.

HE was never beaten , he only lost his 2 fights from injury stoppages. In BOTH of those matches he was winning on points!

His detractors might say he never won over another ATG. But he has a very good ledger with some great fights on it.

WHO would be favored to beat him?

There's a difference between an "injury stoppage" where you get your face opened up like a watermelon, and one where you throw a shoulder.

But it's very hard with Vitali, because his resume isn't great - and the two best guys he faced (arguably) are losses.

he kinda "got injured" only when he fought someone good, which doesnt help your argument.

You rarely see any decent ONLY getting injured only when they fight someone good....but vitali gets a free pass for it.

Well, it takes a little luck to go undefeated. Thats why its so rare. Very few boxers if any won a higher percentage of the rounds they fought in and Vitali did not really avoid anyone to my knowledge.

There are two problems with this hypothesis.

His resume against ranked opposition is very thin, and he lost against the two best opponents that he faced.

This makes it hard to favor him over the great heavyweight champions of history.

I happen to think that he was very unlucky in terms of timing.

He got a career altering injury at the exact moment when the division seemed to be at his mercy.

He also had to share it with his brother.

Yes but he was riding high exactly when his brother dropped the ball.

Take away his injury, and Vitally might have been the unified champion, while Wladamir had to make do with the remaining strap.

Wladamir would always have outlasted him of course, but history could have been very different.

he was riding high BECAUSE his brother was poor enough to drop the ball to a weak retired contender. He got a free pass at a world title shot in the incredulously easy guise of a retired failed lewis era contender

I personally don't even rank Vitali above his brother. I never understood the apologists for Vitali.

To say Wladimir tested himself above and beyond where Vitali went with his career is an understatement. Not to mention he has twice the meat on the resume.

Plenty. Ever been to the General forum? Stick around anyway, I'm sure even a few classic posters will make excuses for the man.
