Lewis was thought of, for years, as an unpopular Champion that held up the division by not fighting.

It wasn't until he beat Tyson, that the media started to give him some recognition. This was just a weak attmept to restore some credibility to an old, washed up Tyson.

Have you guys forgotten everything?

Lennox was never this popular as Champion!!

 

Regarding the op post, I feel Vitali is getting an unfair knock here about being a classless loser.

When he tore his shoulder with a potential career-ending injury against Byrd, he (very wisely) retired. Given the flak he took for that most prudent of moves, it was natural that he wouldn't want to be stopped again.

Besides, he was adrenilin-driven in the middle of his biggest ever fight, so his eye issue was not apparent to him.

He would have settled down if somone had held up a mirror for him.



Regarding the balance of the fight, had it continued, Vitali would have been stopped in the next round or the one after (or whenever his eye fell out).

IF, his eye could have been repaired between rounds (impossible), he would almost certainly have won the fight, but that's not relevant.

So he lost, fair and square, and I see nothing classless in his reaction.


While, from that point on, he was better than Lennox, head to head, he was not so in their respective primes.

And he doesn't have enough time left to improve his resume to a point where it would equal Lennox's.


So, head-to-head and by accomplishment, Lennox was greater.

But no shame in that.

I rank Lennox 3 or 4 alltime.

It's a different scenario anyway, Lewis didn't fight Byrd or Ruiz because he had bigger fish to fry. VITLAY didn't fight Rahman for several reasons, all of them bull****.

Yes those surgeries were completely fake and bull****. He just decided to sit out of the game and not make money for 4 years because he was waiting for Glass Jaw Hasim Rahman to lose the WBC belt because he is so dangerous. :roflatsch

it's unfair to compare lennox retired to wlad now. a more equitable comparison is at the same age and they are pretty close resume wise. Lewis didn't unify til he was 34/35ish.

Imo, Lewis will always be a notch above wlad h2h due to certain intangible factors but Wlad can become a great through sheer volume of title defenses against top 10 opposition. He needs to completely unify or get at least 1 more belt. Say he goes undefeated the next five years and fights 2.5 times/year. that's 12 or 13 fights added to his already 11 world title defenses. it's a big ask but with the way he takes care of himself and how little damage he takes it's certainly feasible

but even if does do that...5 years from now, Fighting Weight will still call him a bum :yep
