I have nothing against Vitali, and he's doing his thing and all, but he's not beaten a single prime ATG in all of his career. That may not be his fault, as there are no prime ATG HWs around. He's only ever faced 1 ATG HW in Lennox Lewis, who was already past his best, and he lost, even if it might have been controversial (imo the decision to stop the fight was justified).
How Vitali would have fared in a rematch with Lewis or against other ATG HWs is just irrelevant here, as we will never know for sure.
Therefore, Vitali can not be considered an ATG HW.

But, how do you consider Lewis an ATG heavyweight then, if he never defeated an ATG heavy in their prime? I mean, if you don't consider Vitali an ATG, that doesn't count and I doubt anyone thinks Evander or Tyson were in their primes...I mean, if I catch your criteria correctly, and I'm not arguing with it, just curious about it. But it doesn't seem like Lewis holds up either.

I posted a lengthy, meticulous post here a while ago. It explained how the idea that "You have to beat a great to become a great" was logically false.

One of the points to consider was how did the first 'great' get considered as such, when they logically can't have defeated a previous one?

The post was fairly well received, and generally acknowledged to be logically as solid as a brick. You do not have to beat a great to become a great, you can do it by stringing enough wins together against good fighters.

Great joke, Lennox Lewis beat a Prime Vitali, he needs only 6 Rounds, for real only the 3. round and Vitali had a bloody face, maybe in the 7. round Vitali had lost his eye forever.

Vitali is only top 20, nothing else.

VK is barely a top 10 contender. However, this is only based on whom he fought. He would be a hard nut to crack for any ATG heavyweight of the past.

He hasn't knocked anybody out since Williams, either the ref stepped in or they quit on the stool...

Yesterday I don't know whether I would call it premature stoppage? The ref didn't give Albert a chance to get up :huh

Funny thread, I am huge Vitali fan but this era isnt good for his legacy. To be fair he wasnt proven by any prime top 10 ATG.Lewis bout is a ****, I think that Vit could win it, but injury was really bad and unlucky.Have you seen similar injury?ITs not common even when fighter gets his ass whooped.

BUt Vitali is top 15 ATG, maybe top 10, and of course, face to face al ATGs would have tough work with him

I haven't seen the post but I agree with the logic and have always felt that way. I don't like to argue it though, because it usually is pointless and I never sway anybody when I do.
