    How did that cut happen?

Lennox was going to knock Vitali out most probably. Only a matter of time. The tide was turning.

Any legit guy would knock out Lennox in the state. Look at the Rahman fight

Nobody wants to hear this but Lewis in a rematch might have been an even slightly worse version and still won. :deal:

McCall was supposed to be a showcase fight

Watch the HBO broadcast. They were saying this is gonna be the beginning of Lennox Lewis's takeover

Yes but that doesn't mean he wasn't taken seriously.

Ohh he for damn sure knew! That’s exactly why he didn’t take that rematch. Manny Steward knew that was going to look bad on his legacy and tried to get lennox to take a rematch but lewis felt someone in there that was NOT going to let him dictate the pace and would stand up to his best shots ;) So.. he called it a day and blamed it on his Mom telling him to. Oh well. Is what it is!

No this was different. I’d understand if he didn’t once fight Vitali and Vitali fans saying “Ohh he’s chicken!! He should’ve fought him!!” THEN that argument you make stands!

But this was off a fight that quite frankly shouldn’t have been stopped because Vitali’s corner had that cut under control and Lewis COLLAPSED onto his stool after throwing everything he had in that 6th trying to get that big ass 6’7 250lb Ukrainian terminator out of there and he couldn’t ;) Fritz no doubt saw that and was probably going to tell Vitali to keep his distance, don’t let Lewis smother him and set up another HARD 1-2 and that would be the beginning of the end for a spent lewis. But… we know what happened.

This fight wasn’t a case of “Well there will ALWAYS be another fight everyone wants” this fight needed a rematch. For two reasons. #1 Lewis ****ing SAID he would rematch Vitali. Talked **** about “Busting up the other side of his face. And #2 The whole world (Minus worried lewis fans) wanted to see a rematch.

Honestly, I’ve never bought into the idea that Vitali lost to some "washed" version of Lennox. Was Lewis past his prime? Maybe. But even at that stage, he was still dangerous, experienced, and could crack like hell.

Vitali came in on short notice and took the fight to him. He was winning on the scorecards, landed the sharper shots early, and pushed Lewis harder than anyone had in years. That cut? Yeah, it was brutal. But let’s not act like it was a lucky fluke — it came from hard, clean punches.

If anything, that fight proved how good Vitali really was. He gave a Hall of Famer all he could handle and probably would’ve won if the cut hadn’t forced the stoppage.

So no, Lewis wasn’t at his best — but he was still good enough to survive, adjust, and take advantage of the one opening he got. That’s what champions do.

End of the day? Both came out looking like warriors. No shame on either side.

Are we really criticising a guy who lost to a legend on cuts? Vitali was ahead on all three cards against Lewis. Whether or not he would have gone on to win is open to debate but he certainly didn’t “lose” that fight in the real sense of the word.

Vitali could easily have been undefeated. He was beating Byrd too until his shoulder injury stopped him from continuing, although I do wonder whether he could have grafted his way through another 3 rounds to eek out the win there. I suspect other fighters would have tried.

Vitali wasn’t overrated, but I do think he may not have become what he should have become.

The reality is if that fight continued Vitali would have received career altering injuries. 4 separate gashes caused at different points in the fight, his eye lid was falling off, the doctor confirmed Vitali was visually impaired after round 6

Lewis was always going to smash Vitalis face up no matter how much success Klitschko had. If they rematched Lewis would have just reopened the cuts. Why don't people take this into consideration ? It's the most probable outcome.
