I'm glad to see you agree it is an excuse. There are many boxing matches where one second of action can change the loser into the winner. When this happens, a re-match is typically in order. Lewis himself greatly benefited from getting re-match, but if you look at his resume of wins he never gave one to Bruno ( who was in the lead and had Lewis in some trouble ), Mercer ( Who some feel deserved to win or draw, I myself had it 6-4 for Lewis, or Vitali Klitschko who was up 4-2 on all 3 cards and had Lewis tired, but lost on a cut that some say was controversial in terms of how and when it happened.

BOTH went up in stock. Vitali was the best fighter Lewis defeated. In much better shape than Holyfield was or Tyson was when Lewis defeated them.

Lewis was a great older fighter, and as you can see claiming he could be around for a while prior to this fight which took place when he was 37 years old by the way, not 38 as you'll see some here claim. Vitali by outpoint Lewis proved he was the better boxer.

No-rematch I think hurts Lewis, because he said he do it, talked up a storm, then quietly folded his umbrella when WBC ordered it. As a champion, going out this way is not going out on your terms.

Some valid points but I don't see any validation for calling it a duck. He fought Klitscko. He beat Klitscko. And instead of sticking around and avoiding Klit while milking the sport for safer pay days, he retired. His rating isn't affected in my eyes and nor Is Vitali's elevated. As for him waiting 8 months to retire while talking about a rematch and even fights with other challengers it shouldn't be surprising. You don't just walk away from a multi million dollar career without thinking it over first and considering all you're options. He had to discuss it with his family, his management, his attorneys, etc..

yes Mendoza, magoo is making fair points.

dude, you obviously have a hate on for Lewis in a biased way the way you talk about him.

Is it because of what he did to Vits that you hate him so much?
Because you like Vits so much you kinda therefore hate Lewis?

Not trying to offend you but that's what it does kind of seem like to me dude.

You make a big deal about Vits being up on all 3 score cards at the time of the stop, yet you don't make a big deal about how the last two rounds before the stoppage Lewis was winning with very solid blows.

I think you need to relax on Lewis and just give him credit for the great champ he was :rasta

    No some do not say:

You say it was the result of a foul, just as you said Lewis was more marked up at the end than Vitali was. Lewis was 3 months off of 38 years old . Your thread has found everyone disagreeing with you and your tired attempt to character assassinate Lewis is a tired joke.

Vitali outpointed a slow, sluggish and rusty Lewis. He weighed more than ever and had fought once in 2 years before that fight. There is simply no argument. Lewis' peak years were from 1996 to 2000 at best. During this period he displayed quickness, sharpness and conditioning which was clearly not present during the Vitali fight. The commentary noted this multiple times.

Lewis was in training for a bigger stronger Hw than vitali was,he negelected to fight Vitali on 4 occasions prior to this match up,only giving vitali 2 weeks notice when he knew vitali was not really training for a top guy...this is simple logic to add up. Well for SOME!

    "Lewis was training"

No he wasn't. If he was, he'd be in better shape.

that cut was caused by a god damn punch. nothing else. Now all of a sudden its a foul? I'm glad I won't be alive in 50 years to see what this legend will turn into.

Lewis was scheduled to fight Kirk Johson in 2 weeks prior to Vitali replacing him, what are you talking about? And they were going top be on the same card anyway on the SAME night BOTH Vitali and Lewis of THAT night even if they didn't fight eachother.

The difference is Vitali was training for a total different type of fighter, lewis was training of someone who could punch.

I'm saying he didn't train properly for the fight. A fighter slacking in training camp is nothing new, Tyson did it for Douglas, Bowe did it his entire career, Lewis surely could have done it for one fight, right?

He was 256 lb and was huffing and puffing after 2 rounds of action. Also repeadetly walked into a lot of punches face first. He was old, rusty and in bad shape. It's on film, not debatable.

I've seen people claim Lewis cut Vitali on purpose....with his dreads.

Yup, allegedly he opened the cut with a headbutt and then kept rubbing his dreads against it during clinches...

He put on weight the extra added weight to be stronger than vitali and push him around,he admits this and so did Steward, the weight worked for and against him,in one sense it helped him stay in the center of the ring and made it a neutral physical fight ,on the other hand it slowed him dowen a bit,but one wishes to forget the right hand that Vitali cracked him with that took thalf the life out of lewis in the second round.Like you said it ON film. :good
