The Ring Magazine was very quick to crown Lennox Lewis' successor. Vitali Klitschko and Corrie Sanders were no. 1 and no. 3 in their rankings, so they decided that their title will be on the line when they fought in April 2004. The coronation struggled with legitimacy as number 2 rated Chris Byrd held a victory over Vitali and older Klitschko was one of only few Ring Magazine champs who wasn't universally recognized as the lineal champion.

Does anybody here have archive issues of the magazine with the article justifing their decision? It probably would be somewhere around March-April-May-June of 2004.

Then Vitali retired so soon after Lewis interestingly.

21 months later to be exact. If someone would want to be unfair, they could say he ducked Hasim Rahman, lol.

Oh yeah he was in training in 2005 and meant to fight but multiple injuries got in the way.

He postponed the fight twice due to his injuries and then got injured again and retired.

Ring Magazine were essentially following their own policy, but for various reasons the title claim failed to put down roots.

Yeah, Vitali had a glass body, while Wlad had a glass jaw.

Vitali appeared to have less problems with injury in his 2nd WB reign. Perhaps he changed up recovery methods and he arm punched a lot more possibly not wanting to risk his shoulder again.

Plus he picked second and third tier heavyweights to defend his belt against, leaving top contenders to Wlad. Funnilly enough, before he hung up his gloves for good, he rescheduled his bout with Stiverne twice too due to the injury.

Interesting, so we might've gotten Wilder vs Vitali for the WBC belt if Vitali's body held out a little longer.

At that stage of his career, Vitali had slowed down a lot in terms of his overall athleticism, but was still as strong as a bull with an iron jaw. It would've been quite the test for a young Wilder's first title shot.

I don't know where the idea that the literal 1 and 2 must fight for a vacant belt came from and how 1 and 3 fighting for it became a controversy.

He didn't but there was nothing stopping Vitali from fighting Byrd next.

Vitali wanted no parts of Byrd.
