How many of his fights have you seen? I've only seen the Johnson and Dempsey ones, and clips of the Firpo and Floyd Johnson ones. I don't think you could gauge an accurate picture of his abilities from the last 3.
You can see Willard in a clear film vs. Frank Moran. And he does better vs Frank Moran than Jack Johnson did.
OK, but ... Frank Moran. Moran launches an overhand right from the judges box. He's like a poor man's Kallie Knoetze.
Sure, which is why Vitali is winning in two of them and against Sanders that's about as bad as he looked. I'd personally pick Lewis and Sanders over Willard any day of the week and probably the other guy too.
Yes Moran too,I'd forgotten that one.Remind me again how Jack Johnson features here? I thought the thread was Vitali v Jess? Have you ever seen the Polanski film "Compulsion" you remind me of it a lot!lol
The history of boxing is littered with cases of throwbacks. and this is a case in point. Vitally Klitschko took the unorthodox style of Jess Willard, and employed it in the 21st century, with considerable success. It pains many people to admit the similarities between the two. So how do these two Willard school super heavyweights stack up against each other? It may fairly be said that Vitally had a lot more ring experience, by the time that he was fighting the best, even allowing for the sources that suggest that Willard had unrecorded fights. It is also clear that Vitally was a much more instinctive fighter, had more killer instinct, and was probably a better ring general. Beyond that: Power I give the edge to Willard. Chin I give the edge to Vitally, but I am perhaps giving him the benefit of the doubt. Stamina I give the edge to Willard. I can't prove this, but I get the idea that Willard was much better on the inside. His uppercut seems to have been a fearful thing, but I am basing this on written descriptions.
Take the blinders off.. This fight would be fought on the outside its Vitali teeing off on Willard at will due to the huge disparity in handspeed, punching ability, workrate, skill, and athleticism. It would be a massacre. Willard wouldn’t even land. I would hope the ref steps in early to prevent another Shannon Briggs beating!
They don’t look anything alike Willard waddles in..no movement no defense, wide open, off balance, horrible stance, no combinations, doesn’t mix up his punches, has no left hook, doesn’t understand range or distance at all, has a low workrate, has no idea how to throw a combo off the jab Vitali is a master at utilizing his reach, understands how to control distance, moves his feet, moves his head, great upper body movement, throws fast accurate punches from all angles, has a very high workrate, doubles and triples up on the jab
I'm just examining your remark that the "frankly looked awful in many of his fights",and I find you, like myself, unqualified to make that remark.
Both of these guys are accustomed to having a reach advantage. They would not have it here. This would be nothing like their regular fights. It would turn into an Irish brawl, and it would end up on the inside!
You are trying very hard here, but the film tells the story! The major difference is that Vitally has a guy who is willing to come to him, while Willard sometimes has to follow his guy. You are throwing him a lot of compliments, but if these differences stack up, then you should be able to demonstrate them from the film! Give me examples!
The only way Moran could get the title was by knocking Wilard out as it fought under the no decision rule, so if both fighters still standing at end of fight no decision was result, this meant Willard retains title. So Moran was going to throw his 'Mary Ann' hoping to get a lucky punch in, being 5 inches shorter and nearly 50 pounds lighter, Moran had quite a task on his hands.
