Vitally has a lot left to probe before he can be picked over a heavyweight of the stature of Schmeling and not much time left to prove it.
Of course Schmeling rates higher all-time, I'm not disputing that. However how do you see this one transcribing head-to-head from a stylistic viewpoint? Size, reach, skill, durability, power etc, etc. You know the drill? * I think it'd be an interesting contest for sure.
I would find it more interesting if this was VK had beaten a few of the top fighters of his era. the other Klitschko would make a better oponent for Schmeling.
I think Wlad will get knocked out with a Max- counter right hand, Vitaly on the other side would probably wear Max down (Schmeling ahead on points)...
The current version of Wlad (with the aid of Manny Stewart) is perhaps a slightly better fighter than Vitali ever was, however the big 'question mark' would be his weak chin against a hard hitter like Schmeling* *Vitali doesn't have this same deficiency and also possessed superior defence.
I dont take anything about VKs chin for granted yet and I would dispute that his defence is superior to his brothers. Apart from the fact that he is big there is really no reason to pick him over any all time great. Some of these match ups will seem vaguley silly in 50 years time when VK is forgotten.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Klitschko lumbered around the ring like Frankenstein taking a lot of early rounds before his body failed him someway or another around the middle rounds, at which point I reckon Max would tee off on him. I don't like to predict injuries during the course of a fight, and this isn't even a prediction per se, but Vitali's body failed him in his two biggest tests against Byrd and Lewis--I can envision something similar happening against Schmelling. BOTTOM LINE: If Byrd can beat Vitali, Schmelling would certainly have a chance.
In all fairness, your talking about 2 instances in 37 fights, neither of which were actual KO's. In addition, I don't consider suffering a major cut to the face as an uncommon occurence among fighters, and yet it only happened once to Vitali leading to a stoppage. The rotator cuff issue was a freak injury. Schmeling on the other hand, lost 10 times and was Ko'd or TKo'd at least 5. He also never fought someone who was as big all around, or had the granite chin that Vitali had.
Max Baer is remembered today because he beat the best of his era like Schmeling. Klitschko did not. If you are going to pick Vitally Klitschko over Max Schmeling then you might as well pick any bum above a certain size to beat him because that is the logic you are going by.
Indeed Klitschko did not beat the best of his era, but the controversy about the Lewis fight has made him the most discussed heavyweight since that fight so i doubt he'll be forgotten quickly. This is not something i expected to hear from you.
Jeez Louise, You seriously think that Vitali Klitschko was a bum? Christ Janitor, I'm convinced that you'd pick even the seediest tomato can from the early half of the century to beat any fighter licensed and registered after 1960. Its futile to even have cross era fantasy match-up debates with you, as just about anyone can predict what your view will be.
