Vitali would be the number one fighter in every era pre 70s. I wouldn't like to say past that point though. The 70s were a huge leap forward and as controversial as it sounds I think every decade since then has been better than every decade pre 70s. The 80s and 00s get such a bad press from boxing fans. I'm hated for saying stuff like this but Holmes, Tyson and the Klitschkos would tear through Johnson, Marciano, Dempsey and even Louis.

The truth is we just don't know enough about prime Vitali because his prime years were lost to injury. For me Vitali is doing more for his legacy as past prime old Vitali than he did in his prime which makes him difficult to compare

Vitali would have a very difficult time just getting past a prime Shavers, B. Smith, Mercer, Bert Cooper, Ruddock, Bruno, or Jimmy Ellis.

It is more probable that they'd be defeated by the top contenders even before they could hope to get into championship contention to face an Ali, Holmes, or Tyson.
