Lewis would have made 20 million ina rematch with Vitali. Why did he retire? was he scared of losing the rematch?

It's interesting how in some people's minds Lewis, coming from one of his biggest career wins over Tyson in 2002, suddenly became shot only one year and one fight later. Go and look at the weigh-in pictures and tell me Lennox was out of shape.

Lewis weighed in at a career high 256. Shot may be the wrong word I apologize, heavily faded may be more of a better description. Definitely no where near prime though.

You're one of the better historians here on the forum. Could you point out one opponent of Lennox who, after losing to Lewis, went on to enhance his own resume and legacy rather than continue his decline or implode altogether? Go through them one by one.

Botha, Grant, Golotha, Holyfield, Tyson, McCall, Rahman, Mavrovich etc. What have these guys done after losing to Lewis? Nothing.

I'm not taking anything away here from Lewis, I just feel he doesn't get enough credit for his win against Vitali, his only opponent that was on an upward trajectory in his career rather than on a decline like the rest.

"out of shape lewis" I love it.... He was only 3 pounds heavier than his first fight with Hasim Rahman, when you are a 6'5" heavyweight taking a ****, a ****, missing a meal and not having a drink can mean the difference between 3 pounds.

So far, and probably for keeps, the Lewis fight will be Vitali's defining moment. The comments here indicate the controversy over that fight will long rage on. Not only Vitali but most boxing fans feel deprived by there being no rematch.
However, for me there was yet another. Vitali was hurt early against Corrie Sanders, and Sanders' profile would have become HUGE had he knocked out both Klitschko brothers, vindicating his career and wiping out his reputation as an underachiever. But Vitali fought bravely, having several knock-em-down-drag-em-out exhanges with Sanders until Sanders' conditioning gave out, allowing Vitali to just batter him senseless for the last three rounds or so.

And he got laid out because he was totally gassed, due to be out of shape... just like in the Oliver McCall fight.

LL was only 37 and came in at 256 - a few lbs over his usual weight. He got a big break with that cut as Lennox was about to go to sleep for the third time in his career.

But, admittedly, it was a clean win for Lewis and probably the fight Vitali will be most remembered for if he retires right now.

But - it might be Lennox's career best win as well.
