Vitali's career defining moment is shamelessly ducking Valuev. You watch, in the history books of the future, it'll look something like this:

He comeback after a nearly 4 year absence, with no tune-up, & won virtually every round against the WBC Champion. Which has never been done in the history of boxing. That defines Vitali to me.

 

Don't know why everyon's banging on about Lewis-that's just negativity and criticism for it's own sake.

As it stands Vitali's best win is probably Peter or Sanders, he has the oldest champion to return thing going for him as well.

 

You are probably right, Vitaly is not the top 10 ATG material due to his injuries
but he is strong top 20 ATG HW contender due his skills, size and toughness.
I think that is an objective evaluation.

 

Vitali's defining moments are as follows:

INtimidating Lennox into hasty retirement.

Avenging the dangerous Sanders with a brutal beatdown.

Astonishingly easy wins over Kirk Johnson, Sam Peter, Johnson, Arreola, etc.

Scaring Haye into hiding and silence.

Dominating the sport like only Holmes, Tyson, Lewis, Johnson, Ali and Louis were able to. Completely dominating.

Knockout percentage the best in HWT history.

Yes, Lewis did not think highly of Vitali at all. Plenty of quotes from the previous year where he declined to face him because it would be too easy, "Vitali is another Grant. " in so many words. While he was fairly impressed with Johnson's one punch power and admitted that's the only reason he chose to fight hiim.

Vitali is also simply not as big a banger as Rahman, he could hurt an out of shape Lewis but couldn't bank on one punch power to drop him cold out of nohwere. Lewis had time to realize he was in a fight, gather his senses, and scrape past him. He didn't have that luxory when Rahman suddenly leaped across the ring and wiped that smile off his face.

Try thinking a little more and maybe you'll remember the Mercer fight. Rick tested a prime Lewis much more than Vitlay did to an old unmotivated Lewis. Now that was an exciting fight with much more skill being displayed than in the vk bout. And judging by the way the sixth round ended, with vk hanging on for dear life, I highly doubt that vk would have finished the fight. That cut was probably the best thing that ever happened to vk.

I've gone on record to say I AM NOT FAN OF MOST OF LEWIS' TITLE REIGN where arrogance, laziness, and money reigned supreme. Sorry, I don't blindly jack off to everything the man did.


Now a motivated Lewis humilating Golota, Rahman II, and Ruddock is something I can get behind. Unlike most who just want to just hate on Vitali for beating on a fat old man, I have even praised Lennox's smart and gutsy performance in several threads on the subject; showing toughness, durability, and the ability to make on the fly adjustments at a time when he was being criticized for being a china chin softie that couldn't handle a real fight.

 

Lewis by far, that made Vitali, by fighting with that cut, wanting to go on, winning on the cards at the time.

(Im not saying he would of won, lets not go there) but rather that he was up and the public appealed to that.
