Perhaps! McCall is a great enigma, you never knew which one was turning up on the night. I suppose his reputation as being iron-chinned takes away from his skills as a fighter, which were underrated in my opinion. Bryd tended to struggle with tall guys w/jab and long reach - Klits, probably Lewis as well...... McCall wasn't that big but had the reach. Byrd had the chin to take his shots (probably) and was fast and clever enough to stand people on their head.
He never was that skilled to begin with though. You have to have skill to beat Byrd. Obviously, Byrd isn't going to KO him, but he can definetly outbox him/frustrate him. The reason I think McCall does well is because he can rely on his chin and sometimes land something big. When you are in with someone as slick as Byrd you need to have a lot of speed and good technique IMO.
That's why I think Wlad did a lot better than Vitali against Byrd because Wlad is the more skillful and faster boxer. Even though Vitali was winning the fight (8-1) more so on aggression than actual punches landed. I believe Compubox was something like 132-124; slightly in Vitali's favor.
well what round did he first hurt his shoulder in? If its early in the fight and he is winning 8-1 then that is amazing
I think they said in the 2nd because Byrd was blocking some of his shots with his gloves. Don't get me wrong though. I think Vitali should've kept fighting just by jabbing and not using his right. All he had to do is run for the last 3 rounds. Byrd wasn't going to KO Vitali or let alone get multiple KD's to win.
Vitali would be a tough fight for any HW in history due to his size, punch output & under rated defense.
Vitali is one of the best. Period. You just have to look at how he beats his opponents and even against a legend (Lewis) he was more than just competetive. He definitely would've had a chance against any other HW ever lived. His career may not be HoF worthy, he as a fighter with his abilities is. It's not his fault that there aren't any Foremans or Tysons in the division.
So if Vitali got hurt in the 2nd round, then thats the reason Wlad did better against Byrd, not because Wlad is the more skillful and faster boxer, which he isn't
That makes sense. I still think that Wlad would do better against slick fighters like Byrd though, but it's probably a moot point because both would be likely to win.
