He made it very obvious. But that doesn't take away from the fact that Lewis was a solid heavyweight.

Lennox retired to please his wife Violet & his MOM also named Violet.
He's living a happy contented life with his lovely wife & family. He's been offered a fortune to return but vows he never will

I agree Lewis's treatment of Vitaly was shithouse after their fight. No argument at all with that.

Who knows why though? Maybe he did it because he was pissed off with Vitaly for going around with his arms raised and the whole "peoples champ" thing after the fight.

Maybe he couldn't believe that after battering somebody to pieces in 6 rounds, that he could then be given another mandotary challenge. Straight after losing.

Maybe he knew he should retire, but really didn't want to? I read some interview I think just after the Tyson fight where Lewis said he thought he really should retire then, but looked around and thought that there was easy money to be made out there.

    **** knows.

I don't doubt that the fact Vitaly was his next fight played some part in his decision. I think that the facts that he was 38, had done everything he had set out to do, had already beaten Vitaly fair and square once, and really was interested in fighting at all any more (as well as having ****ed knees) - were probably much bigger factors.

I don't recall him promising everyone a rematch with Vitaly though. maybe I'm wrong. I hope you're not talking about the bull**** in the ring after the fight. Which really was no more than a "sure, I'll call you in the morning" when there is no intention to, just to get somebody out of your face.

I do recall something around the time of the Rahman fight though where Vitaly wasn't fit to fight Rahman, but suddenly was fit to fight somebody else around the same time (or after Rahman arragned a fight). Can't be arsed with the details, but I do remember Vitaly trying to fight somebody else before he retired.

Lewis clearly didn't beat Vitali to pieces for 6 rounds... that's just silly.

On to the end of your post... you are thinking about before the last fight was scheduled with Rahman. Vitali had surgery in the late spring/early summer on his back... during that time the WBC scheduled a pointless fight between Rahman and Barrett which was to take place in August. Vitali had already said that he would be ready for a fight in Sept... but the WBC being greedy as they are... just had to make some money off of an "interm title fight" between Rahman and Barrett. Vitali had already had a long layoff and tried to schedule a fight against Maskaev for September... as clearly Rahman fighting in August wasn't going to be ready to fight in Sept. Rahman and his team complained... and the WBC denied Vitali's request to fight Maskaev as he awaited his upcoming fight with Barrett. A fight which wouldn't have affected his upcoming fight with Rahman at all... since it clearly wasn't going to take place until months after Rahman vs Barrett.

As it worked out... Vitali had to wait until November to fight Rahman... and we all know what happened there. Vitali suffered severe injuries to his knee and was forced to have surgery... and ultimately retired for 4 years.

What I love about Klitschko fans is they actually believe, even with the huge sum of money being offered, that Lewis was somehow afraid or ducking rather than finally accepting that he couldn't do it anymore and hanging them up at the right time.

    You guys crack me up.

Ok, he might have ****ed Vitali around a little, boo hoo.
You think he wasn't in turmoil about whether or not to call it a day? You think it's an easy decision?

Vitali just wasn't good enough period. He had a passing of the torch fight against an out of shape 38 yr old and still couldn't win. This coulda/shoulda/woulda BS is really sad, especially since its based on a LOSING effort in a torch passing fight.

Here are some notable torch passing occassions:

    Marciano beat Louis.
    Ali beat Liston.
    Holmes beat Ali.
    Tyson beat Holmes.
    Lewis beat Holyfield/Tyson.

It´s true that Vitali is no Ali/Holmes/Tyson/Holyfield/Lewis, but get over it and give him credit for what he has done.
