Many folks think that Lewis was going to retire following '03 fight with Vitali. This is not true. Lewis was NOT planning to retire in 2003. The only reason Lewis retired was so that he did not have to face Vitali again. The rematch was in the works for December with Lewis hoping that Vitali would not recover in time for the fight. When it became clear that Vitali's cuts were healing just fine and he would be cleared to fight in December, Lewis changed his tune and pulled out of the fight. Vitali easily defeated Johnson and forced mandatory defense for Lewis. Lewis announced his retirement within one week before WBC meeting scheduled to strip him of the title. It is obvious that had Vitali not recovered in time for December fight Lewis would fight Johnson or RJJ instead, or, if Vitali lost to Johnson, Lewis would defend against Johnson in '04.
Hasim Rahman retired Vitaly. The Truth. Vitali only retired years later when it was clear Rahman was shot to ****. The Truth.
Get over it already!!! Lewis won. No matter how much you moan and *****...its not going to change what actually happened.
I believe that Lewis basically didn't have the fire to train hard enough to come in at his best anymore, and understood that it was not worth putting his legacy at risk against a guy as good as Vitali who would be at his best while Lewis would likely not be. He didn't have the hunger for that fight. At the end of the day a prime Lewis is better than a prime Vitali and you'd be a fool to think the contrary. and I'm one of the biggest VK fans here.
Then why does LL not shut up about the fight and conduct himself with class and dignity when regarding Vitaly, instead of running his mouth like the pompous ass he truly is? Vitaly sent that phony rat scurrying of into his boyfriend's arms.
because at the end of the day he won the fight and a win is a win. He deserves credit for it. Vitali's face did not magically turn into ground beef
This is BS and you know it. These guys fight for money not for glory. Lewis dropped IBF and WBA belts so he could handpick his opponents and maximize his profits. He walked away from career-high payoff so he would not have to face Vitali again. He was not injured or planned to retire. He just did not want any part of it - plain and simple.
He had already been through enough and made enough money by that point in his career. If he was younger and hungrier he would've taken the rematch in a heartbeat. Lennox Lewis has made some of the biggest paydays in boxing history.
Even Lewis' own mother fefused to let him fight Vitaly again, knowing full well what would have happened to him. LL loves his mum. Even though child protective services declaired her an unfit mother and took little Lenny from her exemplorary care. No wonder he is so bitter towards the Klitschko's. They had a normal caring mother who nutured her children instead of running the streets, scrounging for a fix. London child services KO 1-Lenny's mum!
