I think Haye's big mouth antics may have backfired on him.

He tried to insult his way into a fight with one of the Klitschkos but he forgot that they're the one's holding the cards.

He also forgot that there was a better former Cruiser weight champion out there who has been waiting a lot longer.

Back of the line for Haye.

I read don't remember where that Gomez was giving trouble to both brothers in sparring in Germany long ago. Does anybody have more info on this?

whatever. from acounts i read barrett did alright vs valuev but made the mistake of trading too much with the giant. he starched tye fields on versus just before the haye fight. i know fields is limited but fields was steamrolling c level comp, is huge and is effective with his awkward work rate. barret has ws over beck and guinn, two b level guys. barrett-rahman was a lackluster fight where i don't recall rahman dominating him. barrett also had his moments with haye but had a bad gameplan for the guy. and i'm pretty confident that haye would beat all of the guys you mentioned.

if you wanna say toney's a legit guy based upon 1 good round versus a rahman with limited vision from the cut esp based upon the way rahman has looked of late, then i don't know what to say.

IMO, barret is/was a legit fringe contender in the division of the past few years and that's where i rate the other guys tho ibrag and even ruiz might have a case for being a little bit higher.

yes haye could beat another fringe guy like you mentioned to better 'earn' a shot (or face povetkin, peter, arreola, maybe chambers to step up a bit), but i don't think any of those guys mentioned are a big step up if any from monte. the division is that weak and i wouldn't mind haye getting his shot versus Wlad now.

I just watched a bit of Gomez's last fight, and I'd be surprised if he was competitive with Vitali. Gomez's best attribute was his speed, and while he is still fast for a HW, I feel he was noticably slower last fight than he used to be.

That was his one advantage over Vitali, IMO. He was also pretty flatfooted...that will KILL him against the big Klit.

    Vitali by oKliteration.

Vitali is doing the right thing by fighting Gomez as JC has more than earned his shot. The WBC has been very good to Vitali so it's only right that he go along with the program and fight his mandatory. It might even be an interesting fight. One thing is for sure, Gomez is no stepping stone.

Gomez is certainly better than Arreola, and is probably every bit as good as Povetkin. He is a top 8-ish heavyweight, in my opinion, given his recent good wins, and he certainly deserves a WBC shot if anyone does. Afterall, he's had to earn it, twice.

But that said, Gomez is a boring fighter with little power with which to make a name for himself, or to sell a Vitali fight. But, in order to keep the WBC title, it looks like Suliaman is not backing down, and Vitali has to take Gomez on. Haye ain't going anywhere. He'll still be there in the summer, as they planned.

I wonder if Haye will fight anyone else in the meantime, while he tries to get a fight with one of the brothers. He said he would not, but he probably is rethinking that, cause a Vitali fight probably won't be doable til late summer/early fall. (assuming Haye can't get a Wlad fight agreed upon, first)

I like this fight a lot.

Gomez's got real talent, his attitude is ****, but he is the first, since Lennox, who will be climbing up the ring with talent and legit skills.

This may be Vitali's finest career win.

What is this fight worth? something around US$ 6 mil.? so as a mandatory Gomez is entitled to 30% of the purse, which would be US$ 1,8 mil. Vitali's offer is not far from that.

I read on fightnews there will be a purse bid for his fight next friday.

It very well could be Vitali's finest win if he does, in fact, beat Gomez. Kirk Johnson had talent and legit skills but he just didn't have the mental toughness. His going into the VK fight at 260 was a way of quitting even before the bell rang. Vitali roughed him up.
