To beat Vitali, you have to be prepared to take shots to get in under his power and guard , this is obviously easier to say than to achieve. He, [like his brother,] wants you out there at the end of his albatross wingspan ,where he can hit you without shipping anything back. Foreman was another who would push shorter men back to have them a the end of his power shots, but, unlike the Klits he had booming uppercuts for those that got inside. The Bros Grimm are all at sea if you breech their defences. Vitali gets away with carrying his left hand low because he has the height and reach to operate at a distance that the average heavy cannot be effective at. A fast right hand punching boxer with durability ,and the determination to get inside would give him problems imo.
This thread was originally designed to arrive at a probable conclusion of a fight between the 5'8" Sharkey ,and the 6'7" Vitali. I am content it has developed into an appraisal of Vitali's power, but,for the record,I think he takes Sailor Tom out inside 5 rds.
But this certainly does desribe Sharkey, stylistically doesnt it. And the size and weight is misleading. Yes the reach distance is massive, but everyone who fought vitali had a reach disadvantage and most lose because they dont take him on inside. Sharkey was a legitimate top 2-3 Contender of his time, probably a higher ranked contender (other than Lennox of course). Vitali is obviously a totally different prposition to what Sharkey has ever faced, because of his size (probably not so much his style and power). An early or total domination by vitali is not totally out of the question. But, if we assume that Vitali doesnt actually land cleanly enough to stop sharkey, and if the ref allows leeway for clinching and lots of inclose grappling and fighting then this gets very interesting. If sharkey is still in close fighting in the later rounds, you would expect Vitalis stamina to get a real test. It would be interesting.
Sharkey cannot win this simply because he was too easy to hit. A young Jack Johnson was briefly his sparring partner ,not only did he find it hard to miss the rushing sailor ,Tom could not hit him,so Johnson was duly fired. Sharkey would be taking big shots without ever getting in range to inflict punishment of his own. Jeffries said Sharkey 's incessant attack allways bothered , and disconcerted him,and he found it difficult to catch him clean with his big shots, but this is misleading because Jeffries was much more passive against Sharkey than in most of his fights ,also Jeffries did not possess that telescopic jab that compliments Vitali's right hand. Vitali 5rds tko.
I would like to know more about Johnson Sharkey, but it doesnt really matter Johnson hit everyone when and how he liked and did most hitting in close. Vitali can only really hit cleanly at range (at least i havent seen him land well inside). Actually if anyone has video footage of vitali in close, i would like to see it. Anyway, if sharkey was so easy to hit, why did he have so much success against Corbett? Leaving aside, the issue of who wins (i havent picked Sharkeuy), How does a 190 or so pound fighter give himself the best chance agaist Vitali. Stylistically, what would that 190 lb fighter need to look like, iyo? I dont think he would look or do all that different to sharkey. Although a higher workrate perhaps, but i thought sharkey was okay in this area anyway.
I agree with most of your post. Vitali is not effective inside, neither is his brother. Using Corbett as a template for Vitali is a no no ,because Corbett was 68lbs lighter than Vitali ,and had nowhere near his strength or power , Sharkey just overwhelmed him, can you see him doing that to Vitali? For a small heavyweight to do well against Vitali he would need to have the qualities of a Dempsey, fast hands, fast afoot and elusive head movement this Sharkey did not have He would also need to be a dynamite two fisted puncher Sharkey was heavy handed but not in that class, imo. He would also need to have the Mauler's "kill or be killed" attitude ,otherwise we would just have another Haye debacle.
Sharkey was too tough for Vitali. Nothing comes close to old-school toughness; those guys used to fight in mines and halls for food. Vitali never been in the ring with a 5ft.7 180lbs of brutality...he wouldn't know what hit him. Sharkey would be the 1st man to KO Vitali.
