V. Klitschko, Arreola reach deal Posted Jul. 29, 2009 at 07:28pm By Michael Rosenthal Buzz up! This content is protected Vitali Klitschko and Chris Arreola have reached an agreement to fight on Sept. 26 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, according to a reliable source. Arreola turned down an offer to fight THE RINGs No. 1-rated heavyweight and the WBC titleholder on Sept. 12 because he felt he wouldnt have enough time to prepare but accepted a second offer to fight two weeks later. Klitschko thought he had a deal in place to defend his belt against David Haye on Sept. 12 in Germany but Haye decided to fight Nikolai Valuev instead, which opened the door for the undefeated Arreola (27-0, 24 knockouts). Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) has fought twice at Staples Center, losing to Lennox Lewis because of a cut but proving his toughness in 2003 and stopping Corrie Sanders the following year. The Ukrainian is 2-0 in his comeback after a four-year hiatus. The will be Arreolas first opportunity to fight for a major title. The brawler from Riverside, Calif., rated No. 6 by THE RING, has never fought at nearby Staples Center. He is coming off a fourth-round knockout of Jameel McCline in April. I dont know who the source is, but I think a lot of people expected this fight to actually come off
Hell ya!! I'm rootin for Chris but Vitali could be all wrong for him...With that said Chris will be dangerous if he gets past Vitali's jab!
According to this source the fight was moved back from the 12th to the 26th, wouldnt be surprised if this was good information, yet no source named.
If arreola, and i mean IF.... comes in the best he possibly can be, im talking ready to go to hell and back, working all 3 minutes, focuses on winning rounds off of activity.... i can see him giving an aging vitali a very good scrap.... i dont see him winning anyhow, but it would probably be vitalis toughest test since sanders.... this is not prime, vintage vitali here... make no mistake vitali is getting long in the tooth and i think arreola can make him work for it. That being said lol.... i think vitali picks him apart and stops him late. But good fight.
The problems as we all know is that Vitali doesnt lose rds. is is nay near impossible to neat vitali on a decision, unless he is really old overnight. I dont expect that and I think Arreola only has a chance via KO. Arreola was on the radio the other day and says he is training hard and he has a conditioning coach, but that he isnt really seeing any results from that. I think we just have to expect that Arreola is always gonna be chubby, which doesnt bother me as long as his stamina is good.
I disagree; JC Gomez was winning rounds against VK--won a couple anyways--and that's JC friggin' Gomez. I think Arreola has a better chance of winning by applying effective pressure and backing Vitali up for a couple of minutes of at least nine rounds, and circling the rest of the time; not necessarily running, but staying low and moving laterally. I also think that to go into a fight against a fighter like that, who has not ever had an issue with his chin, nor shown much more than a slight wobble in his legs against some very hard punchers, to make your plan to go for a KO is a HORRIBLE game plan. If Arreola and his team has their **** together they will try to bank early rounds with effective aggression and decent movement--which Cris is able to do, if in the proper shape he should be for a fight with VK--take a defensive posture in the middle rounds and try to get VK tired, and then move in in the later rounds, and hope the older fighter starts feeling his years, well, if Arreola can do this, I think he has a very good chance of winning this fight; certainly just as much a chance as any heavyweight contrender out there, aside from maybe Povetkin and Chambers. Good fight; can't wait to see it.
I dont agree with your breakdown but i appreciate the debate. Firstly, you are saying Vitali gave up a couple rds to Gomez, I dont remember my card for the fight honestly. But, vitali is very well known for not dropping rds, hardly any in his professional career. the fact that he might have against gomez just lends to the fact that he is getting old. Now, here is where your gameplan breaks down: Arreola is mostly a flat footed plodder and Vitali will be the one leading and landing the jabs. IMO, Arreola can only use this one chance to win the fight by landing a big right hand counter over a Vitali jab. If he tries to apply too much pressure he will get broken down coming in from vitali who has a very respectable defense.
Fair enough, but the fact that he fought a scared-to-**** and fat Sam Peter and JC Gomez and looked old--maybe old is the wrong word, but susceptible is closer, and finally-able-to-lose-rounds might even be closer-- is about where the discussion of Arreola's chances enters. Obviously, from what we've seen from each fight, a prime vs. prime fight is a VK whitewash, and probably a KO/TKO at some point... But... VK has looked a bit old lately; a bit lethargic. A young, busy pressure fighter might just have the kind of style to give VK problems; his last couple fights, since his comeback, have been against: 1) a heavy handed puncher with sloppy technique, who looks for the one punch KO; and 2) a former cruiserweight w/o real power at HW. One thing both of these guys have in common? They don't throw much. If a young guy like Arreola, who may not have serious one punch power, but is more than willing to throw an inordinate amount of punches for a HW, putting in effective pressure, can put that pressure on, land a lot of punches early, especially to the body, which Arreola does very well for a HW, I think if he can let VK tire in the middle rounds, he can very well win this fight.
