rugby is certainly bigger than it was, its level is slowly approaching the competiveness of football. the 2003 cup was no mean feat.

 

I was only talking about tournament success, of which the Tournoi is our only win v the best teams, and Euro 96 and Italia 90 were very near misses. I dont regard 2002-2006 as anything special, we were merely lucky to survive. We were totally lost against top opposition like the Brazil game you mentioned, not just a little lost but embarrasingly clueless, whereas the 90s Adam/Shearer led England fought tooth and nail against the best teams. The Beckham led England was a sinking ship by comparison. And lets be honest, Germany would hav torn us apart in the last World Cup, even if Lampard had scroed a hat-trick.

Now Lampard, if this intelligent man had been our captain instead of us being led by a poster boy with no leadership skills, we might have done better.

that really not true, you'd be hard pressed to find a rugger fan in whole company offices. but I agree thats its more competitive than people think of it here. It definitely is up there with tennis and hockey but its way short of sharing a berth with cricket and football. there are vast regions of england which have virtually no interest in rugby short of that shown in the local redbrick uni student union.

I've lived all over the UK and Rugby is definetely more popular than Cricket from my experience. Cricket is more confined to the south-east and maybe Yorkskire.

People working in an office don't seem like the Rugby types though.

i am serious. rugger is largely unfollowed in the north of england outside the posh schools and unis, and its been like that for decades. but it has changed now that the goalposts have moved and players are actually proper athletes.

Its a different team certainly from the days of Will 'fatboy' Carling, who was famously shite at every other sport as school so joined the school rugby team where he shone in a tiny goldfish pool who were similarly shite at everything else.

These days, the troops really are very committed and they get respect even from non fans, so I can see its appeal only growing further.

This does ahve a flipside - as the world gets more interested in rugby and now that the 'lesser' teams actually try to win instead of just turning up for the booze, Englands performances will continue to look worse and worse and I am afriad it will be a long time before we win a world cup again.
