Vitali vs Lewis - Did this fight prove Vitali's quality?

It's subjective in practice. If you're Canelo and you're a round or two away from winning, do you think the ref or doctor is stopping the fight on a cut that Canelo's corner can't contain? What about 3-4 rounds? The ref may be supposed to stop the fight in theory but whether he does is subjective. Look at Fury-Wallin: fights have been stopped on less severe cuts than that.

 

The rematch would have been the biggest hw fight since Tyson Holyfield 1 and the biggest fight of Lewis and VK's career for good reason but one guy ducked out.

Yes, they would have to. Dependent on the location of the cut. The Dr. would be forced to take a look if the blood was pouring in to his eyes clearly causing issues w/ seeing. If it's not completely draining to the eyes, the ref will allow at times, so long as the cutman contains it to a degree. Doesn't matter who the star is.

But that being said, not all cuts near/above the eye are equal. Vit's wasn't just a cut, but more so a laceration than an incision. The area above his left lid was starting to droop and hang. That's not just a cut.

The presumption that the doctor stopped the fight because of the eyebrow cut caused in round 3 is a myth. The stoppage was because Vitali had another gash and it was on his eyelid. It was sort of hanging and was visibly blocking a part of Vitali's vision.

 

It was truly nasty. Another round of Lewis target practicing would have left Vit needing plastic surgery to fix. It was more than just the blood.

 

Wrong, it depends who the A-side is. If Fury-Wallin had been stopped then what grounds would Fury have had for complaining? (other than the fact that Wallin was headbutting and raking the cut). That cut was worse than cuts in many fights that were stopped on cuts and it was in a very bad place, so there is clearly an element of subjectivity. The same is true of stoppages in general: there is huge scope to let a fight go on if the officials want to let it go on, even though there are usually safety risks in doing so.

You can win a fight with one eye as Fury did against Wallin and Frazier did for most of his career. I know it was going into 7 but that's where subjectivity comes in. What if it had been 11, 10 or 9 and Vitali was up on the cards? The officials have the power in this situation.
