I don't understand why Maskaev is still in the Mix :patschThe guy should have to fight a Eliminator for a shot at Vitali:-(

Either one of those fights are shitty really...
But in that division, it's hard to find a good one.
Haye and Valuev are wrapped up...
let's see Klitschko vs Klitschko and get it over with!!

It appears the WBC signed some kind of contract with Maskaev offering him a title shot and now they want to honor that promise rather than risk litigation with him.

Maskaev and Ruiz really must retire for the sake of HW boxing! Why the hell do promotors keep putting them on their cards, when they put people to sleep and have no future!? If they earned their right, then fair enough, but they didn't!

However, if this is happening as early as December then i'm pleased. VK has been really active since he came out of retirement, and to be fair, after fighting three top5 contenders in a row, he's earned an easy defence... i just hope it won't take half a year before they get in the ring. Maskaev may have died of natural causes by then, though.

Kevin Johnson would be a much better fight, but i think it would help if Johnson got more matches against (fringe) contenders first. How about Toney or even Arreola? We've seen yesterday that you need to be at your absolute top to even be competitive with Vitali (or Wlad for that matter).

I hope it's Maskaev and he is once an for all relegated by Vitali out of mix once and for all. Get this over and done with.

How about lots of money they would earn if the fight happens to happen? It looks to me like a pretty obvious reason ;-)

Give Vitali a break - in less then a year he annihilated the ruling HW champ, the mandatory challenger and then the freely chosen Nr. 1 ranked contender. Sure you can argue about if any of the three deserved the title, mandatory, Nr. 1 ranking respective, but after these 3 fights if Vitali decides to fight Mayweather because that's where the big money is, I'd say not a word, he's earned every right to do as it pleases himself, period :)

The bloke went for a jog after the Areola fight ... it's not as if he needs time off to recover from his last fight.

Although both of these matchups will be unpopular as well as not being the best use of Vitali's time, I'd rather see him fight Kevin Johnson. At least he has the appeal of both being young and undefeated. Maskaev is way too removed from his prime...

    Agreed,

Vitali needs to stay busy at this stage in the game. Even if he's not fighting the best of the elite everytime out, a decent prospect like Johnson, and just three months after dispatching Arreola would be good for him...

Maskaev is mandatory because he threatened to sue them because of how they handled the whole champion emeritus fiasco with Vitali, Maskaev and Peter. Maskaev wanted to face Klitschko instead of Peter (because it was a much bigger money fight), but they made him enforce his mandatory against Peter first. To get him to shut up and step aside, they made him a mandatory so he'd still get to face Vitali.

Anyway, I don't see either of them being a threat to Vitali. Hell, Vitali could probably beat both of them on the same night, seeing as how a Maskaev fight probably wouldn't even last 4 rounds.
