I just checked the all time HW rankings on Boxrec and they have Vitali at number 38. I always thought he would rank higher. Do you guys think it does Vitali justice?
While i think 38 is too low, there should be quite a gap between guys like Holyfield, Lewis, Tyson, Bowe, Holmes, Foreman etc. because it's not all about H2H and lets face it Vitali would be a challenge for any of those guys, it's about who has beaten who and in that category Vitali can't compete with the other guys, because none of the opponents Klitschko has defeated are ATGs and i'm not sure any of them will make it into the HOF.
It's just database.. Klitschkos were (and wlad is still) so dominant and above the others that they didn't get too much points of beating their challengers.
He was on 1100 points and they retire him on 500 odd, total joke ranking with guys he'd rag doll above him. Are they going to have Wlad on 600 points when he retires as potentially the second longest reign of all time and 80% KO's? If so they are a laughing stock.
You can't very well make it into a HOF if you can't get a belt. Bowe and Holyfield are not in VK's league at all, Bowe was rag dolled twice by B class Golota and EH was knocked down, beaten and stopped in championship fights, okay he bounced back but that is why these guys get called "atg" because they win/lose championship fights. VK would have smashed Bowe and Golota on the same night.
Oh yes it is obviously a conspiracy. After tireless investigations, I have it narrowed down to the following groups, who are denying the Klitschkos there rightful place atop the heavyweight all time rankings: 1) The Tri-lateral Commission/Bilderburgs 2) The UN 3) The Vatican 4) The Jews 5) The Blacks 6) Aliens
Boxrec is about the only remotely scientific based ranking body around. It definitely has some ranking problems, and Vitali's ranking is part of it, but it's also explainable (and goes into the problems with modern HW boxing Jab always points out). Personally I think Vitali belongs in the top 10 all time on HW legacy, and would put him at tied for #1 with Lennox as far as H2H goes. However, modern HW contenders fight each other noticeably less frequently than they did in earlier eras, and that suffers under the scientific formula boxrec uses to create its rankings. Its not really Vitali's fault, he's beat the best fighters of his era, those fighters just haven't fought each other as much as in earlier eras. For that reason, I think a good argument could be made that for all time lists, boxrec should take in era trends like that into account. That would properly lower fighters like Nino Valdez and Joe Jeannette Zora Folley, who weren't remotely the best fighters of their era or on Vitali's plane for legacy, but fought in era's of greater contender on contender action. Moreover, arguments could also be made that HW boxrec rankings should take ko percentage, weight of opponents, and overall record of opponents (as opposed to just record to the point of the fight), among other things. I suspect the boxrec people probably played around with the criteria a bit to ensure that Muhammad Ali came out #1. That said, ultimately its at least a science based system measuring meaningful results, and it does show that modern HW contenders don't fight each other as much as before which is a legitimate issue for those like Jab who dispute this era's legacy.
I don't get how Jim Braddock with a 46 and 24 record ranks 24 all time and Vitali ranks 38. That doesn't make any sense.
I think the points he had before retiring were in comparisen to active Heavyweights, after retiring he has to be rated according to all retired Heavyweights.
