You missed the point of the mans post. Its about being consistantly hit hard for all rounds, not just extremely hard for 1 round. Lewis hit harder than Vitali for sure, noones ever going to argue that. Point being the consistant punching power on all the rounds.
Try watching fights like Donald or K.Johnson, two guys who were never stopped before who he pulverized, instead of when he's 40 years old.....
If you can't tell the difference between the close to 1000 punches he threw against Johnson (coming forward, pushing his opponent to the ropes) from the more measured approach he used against Arreola (moving backwards, keeping his opponent away with the jab and occasional right hands), then you don't know **** about boxing :deal
Volo has the kind of power where after the first round, if he lands a big shot on you, you go back to your corner and think "Holy ****, my head might come off. I have to stay away!" That's lights-out power. Old Vitali has the kind of power where after three or four rounds, a guy goes back to his corner, sits on his stool and thinks "I don't feel very well at all." It's dull power. He's strong, he arm-punches. He's a meat tenderiser. That's "ugh" power. Young Vitali had more on his punches. He was a big banger. Still not a Volo-puncher though.
Vitali is an arm puncher. He uses the style Waldimir once called "the cowboy style" in which you "shoot from the hips." Vitali also does not pivot on his foot anymore if he ever did and this is why he hasnt KO'd anyone in years. Stopping someone on their feet is not the same as a ten count KO. Vitali also doesn't snap his shots but rather clubs and pushes them in. They have an accumulative effect on slow plodders who walk straight in but Vitali cant stop anyone with good movement (Kevin Johnson,Chisora) This is likely the reason that he wont be able to KO or stop David Haye. Vitali is not an ATG power puncher and he was never close to Shavers.Foreman,Bowe,Tyson,Lennox Lewis,Dempsey etc. That being said, he is physically very strong.
Young Vitali put everything into his punches. A full 240 lbs. Not the best technique and not textbook punching but still clobbering hands. Post operations and injury Vitali is more like a HW version of Joe Calzaghe throwing cotton ball punches.
So is 2:29 on this video an arm punch or a hook? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4_oNoowp8Q&feature=g-vrec[/ame]
I completely disagree, he has heavy hands and he is a natural puncher and a mean kinda guy. Psychologically much stronger than Wladimir. He absolutely dominates the fights technically with what seem to be arm punches and range finders but once he softens em up, they all finish what they are willing to do and quit except for Adamek who took a whoopin and Briggs who was punched all the way to the Hospital after the final bell.
He is an old man now. I think he doesn't commit to punches nowadays because he's found that if he does he will aggravate an injury. He's had back, knee and shoulder surgery. He's found that he's big and strong enough that even his arm punches hurt and that by not committing he can dart in and out. He' strong enough that even without committing he can knock people out through accumulation.
