Maskaev is not currently worthy of fighting for the WBC title. That being said, I believe he threatened to take the WBC to court for some transgression, which knowing the WBC, they are probably guilty of (during or related the the Samuel Peter Fight). As a result, the WBC is trying to settle the issue out of court by giving him a free title shot, that is why he has become the next mandatory. I hope someone knows more about this story than me and can share the details.
That being said, I personally would like to see Vitali annihilate Maskaev, for all his trash talking about the amature stoppage of Vitali or even Rahman to shut up people forever about Vitali being scared to fight him. I would really like to see Vitali vs. Nikolai Valuev however.

You reckon Maskaev is a good name on the resume? At this point?

Still, I suppose any name looks good on Vitali's resume, its truly awful.

Regardless, this is a disgrace, and Vitali should be able to target Valuev, Maskaev is a complete waste of time. The WBC are a disgrace for letting this happen.

Vitali is an ******* of the highest order.

He jumped the queue for his title shot based on a laughable "Emeritus" title which he did nothing to earn, after holding the belt hostage for two years without facing his mandatory challenger.

He needs to shut his ****ing mouth and do whatever the WBC tells him to. He owes them.

Besides, Maskaev earned his shot by beating Vitali in the amateurs. :yep

Edit - I just read the end of that article. One of the fighters mentioned that they want instead of Maskaev is ARREOLA?!?! This has to be a joke.

I bet you are right. ANYone can see that Oleg is not deserving of a mandatory, even Jose Suliman..........So I bet you hit the nail on the head; I bet Rappaport has threatened to take Suliaman and the WBC to court over that being screwed over they were claiming back during the Peter Vitali Oleg fiasco days some time back.

Good call. I bet you are right. and this is the reason why Oleg is being deemed a mandatory when he clearly don't deserve it.

Well, that's basically what the article says.

**** me. Larry Holmes will find out he was duped of some money 30 years ago, and get the next shot. (he'd probably come in in better shape than Kirk Johnson did against Vitlay tho....)

While I agree that the WBC (and the other organizations) are a bunch of ill-organized crooks, there is a world of diffference between Oleg's case and Vitaly's.

Vitaly was injured several times training to defend against Rahman.

When all sides got tired waiting for the fight, Vitally retired and in return, was told, if he ever heals up and can fight again, he'll be first in line.

He never lost the title in the Ring.

Oleg LOST THE TITLE IN THE RING to Sam Peter, so no more rights to a challenge than anyone else.

The two situations are completely different.

Yes, they're both different - but both are rules that have never existed before, being made up to suit the WBC because of a situation it finds itself in.

You can argue one may be more worthy than another, but the point is the same. Vitlay benefitted from the WBC making up new rules for him - it's a bit hypocritical to get bent out of shape when they do the same thing for somebody else.

That part of your point is valid.

These are the same clowns who decided that Peter had to fight Toney again, because some folks didn't like the decision the first time, otherwise, no title shot.

It's easy win for Vitali, but he probably losses money by taking this fight. Maskaev has no business being a mandatory challenger. He actually should be retired.

Vitali said he would rather fight Haye.
