Friday, headlining a card in Moscow airing on REN TV. Jones is a late-notice (week-of) replacement for Sherman "The Caribbean Tank" Williams.
Jones is 49 and hasn't fought in 4 years, this will end badly. Regardless of how many PEDs he has been taking.
Guillermo Jones is one of the most fascinating characters in the history of boxing ... who no one talks about. Since losing a split decision in 1998 in a rematch for the junior middleweight title (first fight was a draw), he has only lost one fight in 23 years - to Steven Cunningham at cruiserweight (in 2005) via split decision. I know he hasn't fought in four years. I know he is fighting a heavyweight. But I wouldn't bet against him. (LOL) You'd have gone broke betting against him.
I mean, Sherman Williams is 48 (actually was kind of shocked to realize he is younger than Jones tbh ) and hasn't fought in nearly 2½ years himself. ...and both have only ever been stopped once, and Jones is at least 6'4" and would actually tower over the 6'1" Kudukhov, unlike 5'11" Williams. So there shouldn't be any worse/grislier an ending than before the substitution, at least.
...p4p, certainly, but also, straight up, if they'd fought at pretty much any point since about '05 (when Jones started juggling CW and HW) onward, I'd tip The Cat over The Tank. We're talking a guy that should arguably be a two division and three-time world champion (with a 4-0 record against Laurent Boudouani, Johnny Nelson and Steve Cunningham if you correct all the robberies) and who beat up and kayoed Denis freaking Lebedev (although it was tainted and overturned due to Jones getting busted for PED use) or a guy whose best victory is scraping by Chauncy Welliver via MD. Jones has at least a couple of his own blowing that clear outta the water in Valery Brudov and Firat Arslan.
Jones is still fighting???? 100% agreed. The guy is like the boxing version of the cicada. He shows up every so often, surprises everyone then disappears for years at a time. I remember thinking he was going to be the next big thing at 154 after the first Boudani fight, never thought he would be fighting at cruiser 15ish years later and winning titles. He's had a crazy career, someone should definitely try to get a long interview out of him before he disappears again.
Oh and I say this with no confidence because it doesn't make any sense but it fits with his career. Jones by stoppage
