The respective versions who fought Marvin Hagler in 1979 and 1987. Vito would be too strong and busy for Ray. He'd also take a UD.

Honestly, seeing these little fantasy matchups involving the Leonard of the Hagler fight, you would have thought Leonard had come out of retirement in 1987 to get the **** beaten out of him by some journeyman rather than beating the man universally regarded as the very best fighter in the sport.

Clearly the man was faded, but someone as crap Antufermo doesn't even belong in the same sentence. The Hagler that Leonard fought would have dominated Antufermo in the same fashion that he did in two previous meetings, too.

I don't think so. the fact that Hag was so faded in the Mugabi fight is the ONLY reason Leo fought him. I think Vito of 79 puts unbending pressure on Ray and maybe stops him. Rauy collapsed after the 12th vs. Ha g:cheers:beer:beer:beer:beer:beer:beer

Hagler proved without much doubt that he wound up a superior fighter to a close to peak Vito. Say whatever you want about the decision, it was clear Ray was in Marvin's class, and in many minds, outpointed him.

I think he does the same thing to Vito, and is aided immensely by the many, many cuts he would inflict dominating the early rounds with speed and class(See, just about every Antuofermo fight against decent opposition.)

While Marvin came on late against Ray, he's one of the only one's to do it. Leonard is a marvelous late rounds fighter, and its wishful thinking to think he wouldn't be well ahead going into them.

    Leonard UD. Something like 10-2.

Leonard would have to work for his win but the gulf in class is huge

Leonard being so tired by the end of the Hagler fight is the result of inactivity and the amount of wasted movement that he used - particularly in the second half of the fight. He respected Hagler's power and accuracy, and knew giving him a stationary target was going to land him in deep trouble.

Antuofermo offers nothing but the predictable bull rushes. He had no power,no speed,no technique, and he put punches together like a spaz.No need for consistent movement against such little threat.Antuofermo serves as nothing but target practice for Leonard.

Edit: Somebody like Hamsho would give Leonard a much tougher fight.

Except for the Hamsho bit maybe.

Vito is kind of romanticised on here too much though.

Reading this thread you would think Hagler were a rookie in 1979 and in his prime in 1987!

SRL would cut Vito to pieces but it would be a close fight.

Vito was tough and he was strong. He came to fight, was well conditioned, and had a good workrate. His defense was not the best though. Despite his strength he was not a huge puncher.

Very solid at MW. 5'8" with a 69" reach. 50-7-2 (21) overall and 1-3-1 in World Title Fights.

Even at MW Ray Leonard was faster, he was more accurate, his defense was better, he could handle Vito's punches, and he was well conditioned. He carried 160Lbs. well and was taller at 5'10". He also had a longer reach, 74".

Leonard beat Hagler by SD in 1987. Some felt Hagler won, it was close. Leonard retired in 1982, fought once in 1984, then fought Hagler in 1987. Leonard had never fought at MW before.

Vito drew with Hagler in 1979 and was stopped in 4 by Hagler in 1981. Some felt the draw should have been a win for Hagler.

I'll take Leonard by somewhat close but clear decision.
