:deal Yep. What this guy said. The fact that he shared the HW titles with his brother, and got Vitali to avenge some of his losses for him, really is a huge mark against him. No way does he crack the top 10. Not even if he beats Fury, Price and Wilder.
He can, depending who he beats in his last years. We don't know how long he'll last so we don't know where he ends. Not saying he gets there with ease, but he can get there. Notice I say "can" and not "will"
not when you are an ex-champ and can only gain status and money from a fight, Holmes thought Tyson was too short at 5"10 and lacked the experience to beat him, Larry thought he could outbox Tyson. I would think once Vlad retires he will be done but you never know how a fighter ends his career, Vlads best fights may be in front of him from an action prospective....as skills wane the older guys use what they have and its usually more than we expect from an old tiger
I have Wlad in my top 15, but not my top ten. He is in a very difficult situation. He has a number of impediments that unfortunately diminish his legacy that are beyond his control. Wlad is fighting is arguably the weakest era in the modern era. Wlad has and probably never will get a victory over an all time great. He will never face the number 2 fighter in the division, and I have always rated Vitali highly and think he would beat his younger brother had they fought in their primes. Wlad was basically gifted the number 1 spot when Vitali was forced to retire. Wlad after the Sanders loss was seen as the weaker of the 2 brothers and had Vitali never retired may have never gained recognition as the premiere heavyweight of this era. If Wlad continues to dominate and beats the next era of prospects in the same dominant fashion then I think he could break the top 10 on longevity alone but he'll never be a top 5 and will never match up favourable in head to head situations against the great punchers due to all his early losses.
If he defeats 3 top 20 contenders this year he will be Top 10 All-Time IMO. He would have 16 consecutive title defenses and all of the belts except 1. He would have 21 title defenses counting the WBO title which would make him the 2nd longest HW champion via title defenses ever! Statistically he will be a Top 10 Champion unanimously. Almost every single category he is in the discussion. My Top 13 Currently: 1) Louis 2) Ali 3) Marciano 4) Lewis 5) Johnson 6) Dempsey 7) Holmes 8) Foreman 9) Tyson 10) Frazier 11) Liston 12) Holyfield 13) Wlad
Yes Byrd win was a good win, but Byrd was number 1 only because Vitali retired. It's undeniable that Vitali was seen as the number 1 heavy after Lewis retired and throughout the majority of Wlads reign has been at the very least been seen as the consensus number 2 heavy in the world. Only 1 loss really? :blood Does punching yourself out no longer count as a loss? Did Foreman not lose to Ali, did Haye actually beat Thompson by punching himself out and getting stopped?
