What's the current status of this fighter? Anyone with as big a punch as he possesses despite his rough skills should have a shot in the division (see Sam Peters). At his age, what is to lose by going against someone who is highly rated?
I rate him as a top 10 heavyweight. He should fight Juan Carlos Gomez next in a WBC title eliminator because he isn't getting any younger and a win over Gomez would put him in line for the winner of Peter/Vitali Klitschko. Virchis is very crude, more so that Peter, who has at least shown the ability to box, use his jab, and counterpunch. However, Virchis probably possesses the most raw power of anybody in the division. His knockouts of Vidoz and Hawkins were impressive. He's a brute who has a legitimate shot of beating anybody on power alone. I would probably favor a handfull of guys though.
My point is, at 35 he is not going to become a better boxer... ergo isn't time to roll the dice on his one talent- power?
Last I read, I thought they were still at odds in trying to get the Gomez Virchis eliminator fight put together. Not sure what the lastest on that is, though. I think Virchis is faster and a better boxer than he's given credit for. He's not a specatular boxer, but he's not as bad as he's made out to be, either.
Virchis is a much better fighter than Peter. He would knock Peter out. Valouev would stop Peter also. Chagav would stop Peter. Vlad will stop Peter. Vitali will stop Peter. Povekin will stop Peter. Dimirtrenko will beat Peter, probably TKO. McCline did beat Peter. Toney in their first fight, etc.
:dead This situation is just a joke. He SHOULD HAVE ALREADY FOUGHT JCG and now one of them should be getting ready to fight again.
I dont know, mate! At times Virchis fights as if he were in slow motion.Sprott and Bidenko were running circles around him for 12 long rounds. He needs a stationary target,or a target which has run out of gas so that he can take advantage of his opponent's graveyard slot.Sprott and Bidenko made him look clumsy and extremely slow.Of course he looks better against more inmobile foes or foes who want to duke it out.Nevertheless,he is not really a fast fighter. His firepower is his best weapon. He connects with one of his murderous punches, and you are out of the game whether you are the present nr.1 at heavy weight or a limited bum from Slovakia. He has the power to beat and stop any rival any time of a fight, but I am quite sure that Gomez will expose his countless weak spots in their upcomming encounter. In terms of skills he is out of his league against Gomez. The Cuban will teach him a lesson in boxing. Though I wont be surprised to learn that Virchis has knocked Gomez out cold in the very first round of their encounter.
You have better insight than I, cause you've apparently seen more of Virchis's fights. Thanks for the input. I did see a bit of only a couple of his fights, and what I saw was not as bad as he's made out to be on this site, but, maybe those were weaker opponents. I think Gomez may outpoint him, as well. What is the latest on this fight being made? Seems like a fiasco, trying to put this togehter. Last I read, each fighter said they wouldn't have enough time to prepare by the time the fight is supposed to be scheduled by.
According to his promoter Virchis didnt accept the offered fight purse. Therefore Gomez vs Virchis had to be postponed as there wasnt any available time slot for Virchis' encounter with Gomez anymore.Thats why Virchis will square off against the Cuban after the olympic tournament in China.According to Virchis' German promoter Kohl the huge Ukranian fighter finally accepted his offered paycheck.Kohl stated that he Virchis had to settle with original offer.Take it or leave it! Virchis had no choice! As for his skills he can box a bit.He is no clueless bum with just a lot of pop in his fists.I would certainly favour him over Sam Peter who is as slow as Virchis and as poorly in terms of skills as his Ukranian counterpart is. However,Virchis has the edge in firepower IMO.Whats more up to now Virchis hasnt been floored by no pro fighter. The stationary African would be tailor made for Virchis. Gomez is a different cup of tea.To be fair Virchis should be called the underdog against Gomez. Gomez quite easily outboxed another iron chined and heavy handed huge fellow in his last fight. McCall isnt Virchis, but there are some similarities.
That stationary african was supposed to be taylor made for maskaev too right??? With oleg's great advantage in boxing skills and his power that sent rahman thru the ropes. You think Peter is taylor made for everyfighter.. povektin, now virchis..wlad...vitali
I for my part have never claimed that Peter was tailor made for Maskaev. Neither do I think that Peter is taylor made for every fighter out there. I would certainly bet my money on Sam Peter in a fight against Kevin McBride or Lou Savarese. Seriously,Sam Peter is tailor made for Virchis because he is slow and a stationary target.By the same token he tends to duke it out and isnt known to strictly follow a game plan in order to win a tactical fight. I for my part doubt that Peter has the chin and the punch resistance to goe toe to toe with a murderous puncher like Virchis. Virchis is a limited fighter, but he is a threat to any opponent who just stands in front of him and takes one punch in order to deliver one. Would be pure madness to employ such a stupid tactic against Virchis! Lets not foret that both Sam Peter and David Tua had to go the full route with Robert Hawkins,Virchis' last opponent. As you may know Virchis knocked the experienced American journeyman out in round 5 of their encounter.
Juan Carlos Gomes is a tougher style match up for Virchis than Peter. Peter would get the KTFO by Virchis. Peter was so close to being derailed by Mccline (who is old and washed up) after 3 vicious Knock downs. Peter didn't hurt Mccline once and he landed plenty.
This decision of postponing the WBC elimination fight for September was really lousy. Both fighters are already 35, time is running out on them, they will make the same amount of money in september then they would if fighting in april, may or june, they are tied up to this situation till there, it really makes no sense to nobody, I just can't understand. After all, they only needed a couple of weeks more to prepare, it sounds like they are being punished for not accepting the march 8th date or something. I too believe Gomez should aply a boxing lesson on Virchis, but you never know because Virchis will be there for the full 12 rds and he only needs to connect one clean powershot during that span to finish off Gomez. It should be interesting. Peter vs Virchis? it's an open fight IMO, personally I'd pick Virchis, but let's not forget Peter only lost to Wlad, has beaten good fighters lately and he is the one with the belt around his waist. People underate him a little bit.
