    He gave that fight away:

ESB Classic's vote for Top 10 most unnecessary losses

Use your own judgment as far as criteria. I'm putting up ten spots and a ''Dishonorable Mentions" list. Whoever has the most votes, in order from one to ten, followed by everyone else being mentioned underneath. Hope you guys participate. I find these fights an interesting anomaly in the history of the sport and I think we've all seen them. Reasons given ranging from taking a dive, to fighters simply not working nearly enough and claiming later they'd just felt like they were winning anyway.

I suspect Roberto Duran from the Duran/Leonard II fight will be tops. Please list as many as you want to, with the reasoning for your choice(s), but make a separate comment if you come back to list others so I can keep track without rereading edited posts. If you see new fights come along, please don't be afraid to give the thread a bump with some more candidates. If there's good participation, I'll edit the list as the posts come in. I hope we get some good discussions going from the votes too. :yep

I'll start with 3 choices of my own, to be on the top ten unless and until other votes knock them off. Mine are: Eddie Chambers in his fight with Alex Povetkin, Zab Judah in his fight with Carlos Baldomir, and Roberto Duran, unforgettably and in the most dramatic way during his first fight with Sugar Ray Leonard.

Juan Manuel Marquez's decision loss to Chris John in a fight he clearly did not have to take, for chump change against an opponent fighting in his home nation and who possessed a difficult style to boot. Maybe the judging was suspect (although I think JOhn won enough rounds to secure a close decision), but this was an unecessary fight to take if ever there was one

    Lewis vs. Rahman I

No respect shown to Rahman's punching. Didn't prepare with anywhere near enough dedication. Was mugging for the crowd / cameras instead of taking it seriously. You could see the KO coming for about five minutes before it happened.

Well, I would never blame a fighter for taking a fight with as quality a challenger to his title as that because I think that's what great champions should do but just the same, it's your vote :good. Your grounds not being that he did or didn't do something against John in the actual fight to lose unnecessarily but that taking the fight was unnecessary and he happened to lose?

Mustafa seemed to have a stylistic edge but fought too passively IMO

Ali-Spinks 1. Muhammad should never have given so many rounds away. He's said that himself, many times over the years. He was way over the hill, true, but as he proved in the rematch, still had enough left to beat 'Neon Leon'

The second reason. The reasons why the loss was unnecessary was because JMM was in negotiation to fight Pac in a rematch at 126lbs at the time, but decided instead to face a fighter who wasn't as highly regarded then as he is now in his own backyard for a purse that was only a small fraction of what he would have made had he just gone ahead and faced Pac back then. When one factors the stylistic problems that John posed and the point deductions that contributed to the loss, that's why this was an uncessary defeat for Marquez.
