Vote on who has the better resume Jones or Spinks

Have you actually seen his bout with Sosa? Unlike that fight, Holmes' wins over Norton and Witherspoon could be argued the other way.

 

You right, Spinks/Holmes was a far bigger fight, with the 49-0 angle and the two undefeated fighters fighting in an era where both were worldwide household names. Toney was a treat for the hardcore, Jones was still living off the Olympic robbery to get his publicity.

Holmes/Spinks meant a lot more to the mainstream world than Jones/Toney.

 

Toney won, I have no problem with that. He beat Johnson to, IMO, McCallum bouts are IMO up for debate, Tiberi too.

But in the same way as you posted fights that the majority thought Holmes won, I too posted the Toney fights with an element of doubt to them.

As you have may of noticed, Toney was in a lot more closer scrapes than even a 35 year old Holmes, 12 years into his career.

 

Who cares about mainstream world? Gans-Langford didn't mean much for the mainstream world, and neither did Greb-Walker. Neither of Robinson-Gavilan bouts were the biggest fights of SRR's career, but they were post-facto the most significant wins on his resume.

 

Holmes had a close fight with Carl Williams just prior to meeting Spinks, and was behind on points vs both Smith and Cooney (without the deductions) at the time of the stoppages.

 

All the bouts mentioned were superfights of their era, with worldwide mainstream appeal. Greb, Walker and Robinson were in their time worldwide superstars, in the biggest sport in the world.

 

LOL, Tubbs was beating Tyson prior to their fight being stopped. And The Truth pointed out he had outjabbed Tyson, before their fight was stopped...:yep

 

A better case for Holmes losing this than the Norton/Witherspoon/Spinks 2 fights imo

 

i am a HUGE jones fan and i think it comes down to what part of your resume you're looking at:

LHW: easily spinks
entire resume: jones (due to depth, as has been stated he just collected more scalps across division)

 

I would have to say Spinks.

One consideration would be the fact that Spinks established lineage at both Light heavyweight and heavyweight, leaving nothing to argue over in these weight classes.

Jones never really did sew up any weight class that he fought in.

 

Spinks for me. Just better class of fighters.

 

It's Spinks for me. He has the better wins and Jones has the worse losses. Spinks would have never lost to Tarver or Johnson or been outclassed by Montell Griffin for eight rounds

 

Gans-Langford and Greb-Walker weren't viewed as superfights by contemporary newspapers. Unsure about Robinson-Gavilan.

 

Didn't watch. Don't like to talk about fights I didn't watch or read about. Thus I don't know what was in James Toney - Sanderline Williams draw, so I can't argue about it.

 

More scalps, perhaps, as he had more fights. However, at the top of the heap for many spots down Spinks's opposition blows his out of the water. Jones really only contends with his wins over Hopkins and Toney, and Spinks's wins over Gregory and Braxton hold up quite well.
