Lots of posters from the UK grew up with and enjoyed watching the following fighters:- Benn, Eubank, Collins, Steve Robinson, Hamed, Calzaghe all WBO champions. Also fringe Nelson, Hide, Barry Jones, Scot Harrison etc. IBO and WBU not in the same category. Out of all the current and former UK fighters, who are the biggest household names? Frank Bruno, Henry Cooper, Eubank and Hamed ---- Not Calzaghe and Hatton and Haye.
Maybe but it was also a diffrent era. Even though im not a fan of Joe or Hatton at all if they had been fighting 15 years prior -at least- they names would have been the same as Bruno Eubank and co. But Frank didnt do boxing any favors by moving all domestic action to SKY.
That why I think it's the guys from the UK who know better than the rest that the WBO is a bogus title. We knew these were not title fights, despite what the promotors were tellign us!
Of course they do. BUT the fighter is indicative of the belt wouldnt you say? What are your thoughts on Hattons 15 defences of the WBU?
The WBO is Frank Warrens belt. Nothing more or less. He saw a niche in the market to make money easily with an auspcious title that appeared in the late 80`s early 90`s and its been a bench mark for Warren fighters ever since. Did anyone think Franciso Damiani was the heavy weight world champ when Mike held all the titles back in the late 80`s? Most didnt even know who he was.
im not familiar with hatton's career. but if he beat top ranked guys within the division in many of those 15, he deserves his cred. unlike say a guy like Haye who beats 2 ranked cws and all of a sudden can walk on water just because he's the ring and unified champ. ive said it once and i'll say it again, how the **** do u clean out a divison in 2 fights?!? :rofl it's about quality of opposition, consistency, and dominance more so than paper titles.
Didnt think so. So if the fighter makes the belt then i guess Hatton made the WBU or realistically found his level there. As his not been that much better since. 1 win over a Kostya who was one step away from retirement, a shot Castillo and a pasting by PBF. BUT yet his held in as much high regard as Haye who most of the bandwagoners on this forum have jumped on. Haye in my opinion was a good cruiser. But his body of work there was fairly hollow. I would have preferred to see him there for a few more years and really establish himself as THE man at 200lbs. He had a devastating win over Enzo and seeing as his always wanted the glory of the heavyweight division moved in my opinion north prematurely. Now i too am a fan of Haye and have watched him since an Am. But my view of him is far more subjective and factual that most of the joy boys on this forum who jump on anything new.
not only warren's belt but universum as well. ever notice how many universum promoted fighters either hold or challenge for WBOgus belts? IBO isn't much better. they just piggyback the best fighters in the division, hoping it makes them more important. it's still considered a minor belt.
Indeed. Whenever theres a big fight the IBO`s belt just happens to be vacant and gets flung into the mix.
