As smart and learned a man as Wlad is, does he have the wisdom of Tunney and Marciano? And for that matter, Carlos Monzon and Joe Calzaghe....to walk away while you're on top?
Not many have had the wisdom of the guys you mention...Vlad is very smart but has taken care of himself and feels good but in the heavyweight division a little slippage can make a BIG difference...at this point in time there are only a handful that are worthy and they should fight each other for the right....Fury and Wilder should fight to see who is worthy and there is not much more....
Fury looked pretty good today. Wilder showed he could box a little. Almost everyone in the division can punch. One night too many is easy to do. I don't see what he has left to prove.
I agree, but that makes too much sense for today. Do you know how many defenses Wlad has racked up? Is he close to eclipsing Louis's record for defenses?
If he beats Fury in the greatest clinch fest in history Wilder showed he is better than his previous fights when he has to be he sort of conceals his skills it seems, he also showed serious power that appeared to do serious damage to Stiverne which may show itself in future fights. Deontay is a threat to him if they fight he has the size, speed, power and skills to end Wlads reign.
I can't imagine anyone beating him. His style isn't the style of a young, energetic fighter. It's the style of a savvy boxer who knows his strengths & does everything maximize those while taking little risk. It's a formula many great boxers have used. There's just no one to push him out of his comfort zone.
Fury beats him either by grit and inside-hustle or by being the superior mover/shot picker. Simple as that really. Fight will go to purse bids, UK wins it, get's a decent ref in, Wlad is forced to fight at pace and do something other than 1-2-clinch and gets found out.
I think that once he has rounded up the WBC belt, there is little left for him to fight for, and he should quit while he is ahead. Of course it is in our interests for him to fight on until he looses, because that way the lineage will continue. Can you imagine waiting for that lot to reunify again?
Lineage is meaningless to me, a mystical crockpot designation. I do want to see the best fight the best and not hold the public ransom for years. A heavyweight tournament would be great post Wlad, re-energize the division and thus the sport. I think the talent is definitely there but talent is only revealed under sustained stressÂ… not a succession of soft touches.
I agree, someone should take charge and eliminate the organizations who serve there own interest. I seen enough of the split tittle navigation where the best can be in the same pond but have no interest to get off their lillypad. I like Vlad, he is a class act and would love to see him get out on top but being 39 and close to 70 fights it gets harder. Jenkins is a solid opponent and is always in condition and he has rounded ability. Fury has size and seems to have a rugged disposition, he has gotten off the floor but Vlad has many more tools, Fury is worthy. Wilder can punch, has shown skill and stamina, has shown 12 round condition and can punch very well, we will see if he can take a Vlad rocket but he is young and large and big amateur experience so none of these guys are a walk in the park.
A good interview by Fury's Dad on the current division, Klitschko's age and Wilder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni3T3OrAa90
He may be a class act in his personal endevours , but in the ring , he is nowhere near a touch of class. In the ring and in the K2 boardroom he is a disgraceful con man. I don't know why you keep saying that when its clearly not true.
He will retire on top as a champion, just like his brother. Maybe five years from now. Maybe longer. He still seems ultra motivated.
5 years is a long time at 39. He has shown slight slippage (he doesn't move quite as well and his jab is used less) however you're correct he does seem to still be ultra motivated and he has plenty left in the tank. I think he may have other ambitions outside the ring and being a new father may alter his perspective but I would give him as I posted earlier four more fights. So he will be around for at least 2 years more.
He has controlled the modern heavyweight division for almost 7.5% of its existence. Simply amazing. At some point, you don't like Wlad, you simply don't like boxing.
