I am not underestimating him as I have run off Wlad haters from many boards including this one since 2003. But even if he gets to 80 and 3, he still will have a slight hole in his resume of other atgs that Ali and Lennox simply don't have. And it has hurt Wlad that Lennox retired at 38, Iggy stopped fighting, Haye doesn't fight enough, Tua decided to eat, etc...
Old Holmes, Mike Spinks, Ruddock, Schmeling, Conn, Walcott, Baer, Braddock, Sharkey, Shavers, Norton, prime Mercer, Cooney, are all vastly superior to the likes of Haye, Purity, Sanders, Brewster, Chambers, Chisora, etc
That seems a little unreasonable. If Wlad goes on to a 72-3 record and unifies the WBC belt, I will have him as the #1 HW of All-Time. Having 26 title defenses (31 in actuality) is absurd in modern times as fighters don't fight anywhere near as many times as they did before. If Wlad goes on to a 67-3 record and unifies the WBC belt, I will have him #3 HW of All-Time. Having 21 title defenses (26 in actuality) is still an amazing feat. Every HW Champ has holes in their resumes.
name one boxer among Wlad's paper defenses that was an elite heavyweight. If there ever was a bum of the month club, it was the Klitschkos'. Not Joe Louis' Wlad and Vitali will not be top 20. that is undeniable to legitimate boxing fans
Wlad is just so good. He is the only heavyweight I have ever seen who makes it difficult for opponents to hit not just his head but also his body. In the Chagaev fight this amazing amateur standout literally as hard as he tried couldn't land a body shot to save his soul. Wlad's movement in that fight was stunning and reminded me of Pernell Whitaker's unique ability to slip body shots. Wlad is one of the greats for sure. That's why he has so many haters. Like Larry Holmes said. "Everybody loved Ronald Reagan until he won the presidency. Then everybody started talking **** about him. People hate successful people." Good ole Larry is a wise man, cranky but wise.
Both will be top 20, don't be silly. David Haye was a solid HW fighter. He wouldn't have been a betting favorite in the UK or the fight wouldn't have had an attendance of ~60k if he wasn't a solid fighter. If there wasn't a Klitschko, I could see him beating all of the other contenders in the HW division. He had good size (6'3). Great hand and foot speed. Very good punching power in both hands. Decent boxing skills. Good defense. Solid ring generalship.
Good post, I've pointed this out in previous posts, just not as succinctly. Haye is or was a tremendous athlete. He just got dominated by a huge man who has also great athleticism for such a big fighter.
Lewis finished with zero belts. He managed to duck all of his mandatory contenders before bowing out.
