This whole illusion that he has become better with Roach in only 2 FIGHT CAMPS will go out the window. There is no way, someone drops bad habbits, pickups new habbits within that short of a time span.

Agreed OP. He does look better under Roach but it's really hard to assess because Rodriguez was a cherry pick and Martinez was crippled.

I know the comment above tends to get a lot of hate, but it's true. How he gets called a "warrior that fights everyone" is beyond me.

He fought Mosley yes... but when he was 36 and FAR from the 2003 roided version which, not coincidentally, was his last relevant win. He fought Pac and Mayweather, both at or near prime... no doubt. But what fighter WOULDN'T line up to fight those 2? (other than each other) Plus he got beaten VERY soundly by both.

Basically he got monster props for fighting Margarito when others wanted no part of him... that's about it. His resume other than that is not that good. People will take this as hate but it's the truth.

I don't really like what Cotto is doing here and I'm a fan.

He should fight a legitimate middle or vacate.

In a perfect world, he'd fight Golovkin.

But the double standards with boxing fans are ridiculous.

Martinez was holding the title for a while when Golovkin was knocking on the door and had NO intention of fighting Golovkin.

Few fans had a problem with it.

Martinez gets a pass but Cotto hasn't even fought once yet and people are calling him a complete joke when he hasn't even announce his next fight yet.

    :-(

    The bias is real

It always has been with pretty boy Martinez

If you have followed Cotto's career, you would recognize a drop off in hunger and skill not long after he fought Mosley, and got busted up by Margarito. His relationship with his uncle/trainer imploded, he trained himself half halfheartedly through his next couple fights, then gets a little back in focus with Steward at the helm. That duo was short lived as Steward was mainly focused on Wlad. Then Cotto moves on to Diaz, who tried to completely change Cotto's style and training. Doing unorthodox training and trying to turn Cotto into a Cuban point artist, set Cotto two steps back again. They tried to fool the fans and say it was a good combination, but in reality it was no better than Santiago. The last fight with Diaz was against Austin Trout, and Cotto came in sluggish and out of peak condition. Cotto had a weak training camp and was even flown out of Big Bear weeks early to Florida, effectively ruining all the high altitude training. When an athlete does this, they endure blood sludge and become easily winded as the body is readjusting to sea level.

Getting with Roach revitalized Cotto. He also got a new strength and conditioning coach in Gavin (GSP's same S&C coach). It's evident in his two fights and evident in his training camp footage. You cannot tell me viewing footage of Cotto with Roach and Gavin, is the same Cotto in training camp footage with Santiago, Diaz, and Steward. It's a night and day difference.

For a lot of us here, I am sure we are also fans of other sports, teams, and individuals. Being fans, we should all know how important preparation is in sports. The same holds true for every sport, so to go and criticize a fighter (not just Cotto, but any fighter) that has clearly had ups and downs in their career, it amazes me that there is no consideration of all the facts that led to certain outcomes. An elite athlete that trains at 50% will always lose to a mediocre athlete training with 100% dedication. The saying that fights are won and lost in the gym hold true. Ignoring the facts can only take you so far.

I don't know what to make of Cotto. The Rodriguez fight was matchmaking at its finest, and Martinez was so badly faded I think most Top 10 MW's would have beaten him that night.

Cotto hasn't even beat a healthy top fighter in his prime since he got a questionable decision over Joshua Clottey in 2009!!

Before that it was Judah who had like 5 losses by the time Cotto fought him.

    Cotto has always been overrated.

There will always be EXCUSES. The fact of the matter is, they are just excuses.

Every athlete needs to deal with sh!t, FFS Bobby Chacon fought the day after his wife killed herself. Now I know that is an extreme, but ups and downs come and go, losing and blaming it on anything other than yourself is just an excuse.
