McGuigan - his work on the inside needs to be improved, started brilliantly at long range, question mark over his chin, superb left hook to the body from Gomez, couldn't believe how much stick Gomez took, backs the ref's decision as Gomez has taken a lot of shots both in this fight and also in previous fights, Khan not the complete article and still has work to do.
But it's really annoying, because it's not Khan's fault yet he gets the blame. He would've happily kept on landing those flush shots on a defenceless Earl or on Gomez tonight but the ref decided otherwise, and then people get on Khan's back. I agree that I'd rather see a more conclusive finish but Khan keeps getting stick for something out of his control and that's disappointing.
Well at least now Amir and his people realise they've got a bit of work to do before they go chasing world titles...I think he should have a crack at the British and European titles before getting ideas of that scale.
The thing with Khan is when he gets knocked down it takes him half a round to recover, against a top ranked fighter you simply wont be alowed that time to recover. Luckily for him it's been gomez and limmond on those occasions, against a campbell or a paccquiano he just wont get that luxury. I have warmed to him over time because i used to hate him,and he can cause anyone problems with his pace and power, but his chin is just too weak to ever become a great great boxer. That said he did come back well and showed good heart, but against a top ranked fighter he will get found out im afraid.:bbb
Just thinking about it there ... there was an argument for stepping in because Gomez was being swarmed but that was a BULL**** stoppage in my eyes. Gomez always had a chance to land on him, even with a bodyshot and drop him. Gomez would have gone out on his sheild if they let it go on.
I always get the feeling his people know full well he ain't ready, Warren in particular having kittens, but while he's still unbeaten Khan's not taking no for an answer and keeps pushing...which I think is foolish. The kid is still just twenty one years old...this rush to beat Hamad to youngest UK champ is tiresomely annoying and I'll be very glad when it passes. I wouldn't even care if Khan didn't get a world title shot for another three years or so yet.
We all know Frank would rather his fighters spent years defending the prestigious WBU belt against greengrocers and bin men, quietly making some cash. But really, I don't think that's such a bad option for the time being for Khan. His attacking abilities are fine, it's his defence he needs to work on.
