More than likely so yeah, he certainly appeared to get up quickly on strong legs. If his head was clear it isn't all too difficult to count a referees fingers.

He wanted to win back the title, how is that for a thought?

My opinion he is give up.

Other reason he avoid other injury or 'Real KO'

****ogy : liston vs ali II (took a dive).

Took a dive not by mafia but because realize & accept the other fighter was better even superior.

Maybe charles marciano II is other example.
I read comment in youtube 'seems charles are give up' :D

He didn't show any ambition to do so in my opinion.
Rocky Marciano said he was only there for the money.

Walcott didn't look anything like he did in the first fight.he didn't look like he'd trained and didn't even look like he'd warmed up before the second fight.

I'm of the same opinion concerning his physical appearance ,he didn't have the same muscle tone.

:good he was only a pound and a half heavier but yeah, no muscle tone.
I was watching a DVD on Rocky yesterday, Bert Sugar, Teddy Atlas and Angelo Dundee all said there was no fight.

My take is that Walcott just wasn't the type to give a "to hell with the world" performance and go into the tank in the first. It just doesn't seem in character.

Liston certainly might have thought that way. He was a bitter, cynical man. But Walcott? No.

I think pride would motivate him to give a decent account of himself, and if nothing else, Walcott was a slippery safety first fighter. He went a long ways against Louis w/o taking a great deal of punishment until the 11th of their second fight. I think he could have boxed Marciano for a number of rounds w/o taking that much punishment and without embarrassing himself.

As for getting old quick, he still was moving well to my eyes. Taking a punch? Who knows?

I think the knockout was legit.

I got the impression it was similar to Douglas vs Holyfield in that Walcott went down legit but wasn't all that enthused about continuing.

He didn't look like he fancied the fight to me. The title of the thread comes from Marciano's own comments on the fight.

Their is no doubt the KD was legit. You can see Walcott running into that uppercut and his legs immiatiatly stiffen as he goes to the canvas. What occurred after that KD is complete speculation. Did Walcott hear the count but decide not to get up? Did he momentarily lose the count and fail to make it? Since there is no way to decide what went on I tend to NOT cloud the champions victory by declaring Joe quit. Marciano landed a right uppercut that put Walcott on the canvas and he was counted out. First round ko win for the champion.

One other point is that Walcott had no previous fights where he quit. He always demonstrated the heart of a true champion. By imitating he purposefully quit in this fight one not only clouds Rockys win here but also casts the WORST possible light on Walcott.

    Marciano is quoted as saying

"I hit him with a left hook and followed it up with a right uppercut. I think it was a better right than I got him with in the first fight."

Walcott was quoted as saying the finishing punch

"was a good right hand, but not as good as the one in the first fight. I didn't hear the count from one to three. Then I heard it from three to seven, but I blacked out between seven and ten. I didn't hear it at all. And when I jumped up, I couldn't believe I was counted out. That was my last fight. I told myself that right then. I realized that when you can't recuperate from a punch, it is time to retire."

I have no reason to doubt either man's words.

Walcott was an aging fighter who had managed a wonderful performance against a less than polished challenger
after a bright start by Joe , Rocky had gradually fought his way into the first fight .My take is Walcott took a good shot in the second fight but MAY have thought ,"do you know ,I don't think I want to go through this all again,",and that isn't just my opinion. No slur on Rocky as far as I can see.He isn't responsible for the ambition ,or lack of , in his opponents.
No more than Ali was against Liston.
How many fights did Duran quit in?

Again there is no evidence of this at all. I tend not to cloud great fighters carreer by claiming he quit or that a legit ko win was something less than that.

Does not matter who it is quitting is the worst thing any champion can do or be claimed of doing. Huge black mark.

Marciano scored a ko win over Watcott in round one. No evidence exists that counters the official decision.

I'm familiar with both man's post fight quotes. Rocky also said ,"I think he could have gotten up ,I know I would have."
And, "I think he was just there for the guaranteed purse."
