walcott vs quarry....

Doesn't the highlighted bit imply that they may be wrong in their assessment of how well Foreman would do against the 50's heavyweights, given that an aging Ali beat Foreman easily?

well NO, they knew that version of Ali had lost to fighters Foreman had murdered in 2 rounds i.e. frazier, norton. So they thought ali had NO CHANCE against foremen. Woulda been a different story if Foreman was fighting a 1967 Ali who was UNDEFEATED! Moore & Sadler wouldn't have been laughing so much

 

Joe by late tko or decision

 

Jersey Joe had an inconsistent record. He did very well against many top guys --- after all he became the HW champ --- but lost to some average ones too.

Jerry had two styles. He was a great counter puncher and when he wanted to, he could be a very good rock 'em sock 'em sort of banger. I would not define him as a swarmer in the strictest sense of the term. He used his banger style to give Patterson and Thad Spencer fits and also to knock out Shavers early. He used his counter punching style to beat Ron Lyle and Mac Foster - big fighters who could hit hard but were rather slow.

A fight between Joe Walcott and Jerry Quarry in their respective primes would be very competitive. IMO, Walcott at his best would beat Quarry. Either by decision or late stoppage.

 

Jersey Joe would win this one with his head. Punching power, size and strength did nothing to intimidate Quarry. Highly skilled boxers with speed like Machen, Patterson, Ellis and Ali gave him fits though. Jerry would not be suckering Walcott into the corners for counterpunching. Although Quarry could be stopped on cuts, I think that Joe would simply outmaneuver and outbox Quarry from long range, and neutralize him in close. It comes down to who can induce the other to come forward and make the fight, and Walcott is much the better ring general in that respect.

Great match-up. Walcott would have been too smart to get kayoed early but would have had trouble with Quarry because Q was a sharp counter puncher. Walcott by close decision.
