Walid Smichet announced his retirement yesterday after an 8 year professional career. He gave us many great fights over the years and will be remembered as a true blood and guts warrior but after a 2nd round KO loss to David Lemieux it was time for him to hang his gloves......
remember when he knocked the **** outta John duddy for the first round of their fight... scared the crap outt me!! Best of luck to him..
I wish him well. While Billy Lyell is a local and I'm glad he got John's OH, Walid had a pretty good moral claim to that. I never scored the fight round by round, but we know Walid won the fight if not the boxing match.
8 years isn't that long, and he's young - but it's his decision to be respected, and yeah, he was probably nowhere near a 12-rounder so it isn't as though he had any chance of upward mobility anytime soon. Good on him for making the call. Hopefully he's made (and conserved) some money from the brutal and unforgiving sport.
I did score the fight and Duddy definitely won it, but Walid gave him some serious scares in the earlier rounds.
I know I posted at the time that being able to settle down and BOX under the circumstances showed a lot about John. There was a lot of crap over that fight here. I still think his loss to Lyell was due in part to Burns trying to boil him down to 154.
He was definitely due a loss, because of all the messing about that was done with his trainers, style of fighting etc..Lyell put on a good show that night, i'd like to see a rematch in the future, reckon John could take him
Local station said it is possible on Cotto's under card this spring. Makes sense. John would put lots of asses in the seats and they are talking a large venue. John should get a nice payday out of it.
