Fury needs to fight elite fighters first to look good against elite fighters. Which elite fighters did he fight? Grandpa Wlad and Wilder?
He fought no one of note pretty much. The division doesn't have any big names at the moment, but still you have Parker, Povetkin, AJ, Whyte etc.. At least he could have fought some 2nd tier guys.
I’m sure someone of substance came out after the fight and acknowledged that they only let the fight continue because it was Fury, and there was a lot at stake. It may even have been the ref, but don’t quote me on that.
People wanted Fury to lose. That explains everything, really. They were desperate for him to lose. You can tell how dishonest they are because they don't say, ''It was a freaky cut, Wallin could have been given the TKO but it wouldn't have been truly earned in the boxing sense as he was dominated, and Fury would have been unlucky there.'' They say, ''Fury should have lost'' as though he wasn't as good as Wallin on the night. It's also illogical for critics to say ''if it was the other way around'', because Fury was allowed to continue partly because he was dominating so much and the other way around Wallin would be getting smashed to pieces and be unable to defend himself with one eye, so they would have had to stop it. I think the fact Wallin ripped and headbutted the cut multiple times justifies keeping the fight going anyway, because why is it fair to stop a fight on a cut that was supposed to be caused by ''a fair punch'' when the fighter then fouls the cut even wider. Makes no sense. The other way round, if you butt the cut open then punch it wider, you won't get the TKO.
I think a lot of that is true. I also think, the final two minutes of the 12th round against Wilder was a eureka moment for Fury. He had the classic fight or flight choice after the KD, chose the former and saw how much it nullified Wilder. So he set to work on reframing his style with the rematch in mind. We can forget the Schwarz fight - although we did see a new level of aggression - because it was such a mismatch. Wallin was the first test of how the Fury/Davidson axis could develop a more aggressive approach. I think the outcome of this convinced Fury that Davidson was not the man to train him to fight that way. Had he boxed Wallin in the classic Fury style it would have been a 12-round shut-out. He still won, but because the bad cut and ineffective aggression made the fight closer than it should have been, people translate that into a robbery. It wasn't.
People are not giving Wallin enough credit. He came with a good game plan and was troubling Fury in the early rounds by attacking the body, but Wallin’s inexperience started showing in the middle and championship rounds, since he didn’t pace himself well. Wallin has ability, but like a lot of fighters nowadays he’s badly in need of more rounds. I still think Fury’s biggest advantage in the division is all of the rounds of experience he has over the other guys in the division.
I want to see more of Wallin against B/C tier heavyweights This dude could be a good heavyweight with more fights under his belt. He has the size and ability. His footwork looked really good. He executed a great gameplan & showed no fear. I wasn't impressed watching tape of him prior to the Fury bout but he definitely has ability watching him give good work to Fury. He can box. If Fury was to ever fight a southpaw in the future as his manager/coach i'd definitely look to draft Wallin in for sparring if possible.
That was Wallin 20th fight his best opponent was Adrian Grant with no step up fight going into it with no rounds and inactivity ,not sure what people expected vs a guy most consider the best in the division and rate Wallin as no big deal . Wallin is 6”6 southpaw ,I don’t think anyone should be writing him off based on this fight .
Fury has fought just 1 man in Ring Magaizne's top ten. He record here is 1-0-1. In other words outside of Wilder, who I suspect will become a bigger fraud the next time he fights, he really hasn't beaten anyone since beating a very old Wlad. For the same reason Fury didn't get one for running head first at him repeatedly and pinning him to the ropes.
