I wasn't scoring the fight, but it seemed to me that the commentary in this fight was another example of the favorite bias that was exemplified, to a far greater extent (to a comical extent), in the Crawford Dulorme fight. They were making it out like Walters was blowing the doors off this guy, and seemed to me like a lot of the rounds were close. This happens frequently it seems. They think the favorite is winning when he isn't or winning more heavily than he is. Maybe the scorecards end up looking wide, but the rounds themselves were close.
I thought Mariaga probably won rounds 1 and 4, which they didn't give to him on their unofficial scorecard. Mariaga did get hit more though and still ultimately lost the fight. But it did have that vibe of it being a fight that can go completely different on a rematch.
3-3 in the first 6 rounds, then Walters won every round except 12. So in the end it's 8-4 for Walters. Taking the KD in account I believe the correct scoring of the fight should've been 116-111. 117-110 can be argued but other 2 cards, especially the 119-108 one is simply absurd.
I had it pretty much identical to IB (I beleive 116-111), yeah, it was a close fight in the early/mid rounds but later on Walters pretty much took over and Marriaga couldn't find any answers for anything Walters was doing. Still Marriaga has shown himself to be a good quality fighter I look forward to seeing more from him.
116-111 Walters. They were split after six but then Marriaga went on a long drought not winning a round until 12.
