“There’s losing fights and then there’s losing fights like Wanderlei was losing them,” White said. “He goes out and fights balls to the wall every time. He’s one of the guys who will tell you he’s more interested in putting on a great show than anything else.

“The people love him for it. It’s what happened in boxing with Arturo Gatti. He wasn’t the greatest boxer, but you knew that every time out, he was going to give you everything he had. Wanderlei is the same way.”

As of now, I could agree with this, although Gatti was never as good at boxing as Wanderlei used to be at MMA.

I get his points but Wanderlei had a run in MMA that Gatti dreamed to have in boxing..

Agreed, Wandy was considered one of, if not the best fighter in the world years ago. They do share the same warrior spirit though.

It's true. Wanderlei has that warrior quality that transcends any preferential fan treatment a fighter may or may not get depending on where they are from. Some fighters will get booed for being from a different country to the one the fights are being held in- It seemed everyone in Sydney yesterday had a lot of love for Wandy- and I think it's that the love for watching a true 'fighter' is universal and is appreciated by most fans.

Well said. I remember being at UFC 95 in London, Maia was making his enterance and the crowd went nuts when they spotted Wand in his corner. Would have liked him to get the KO, but I'm happy for him that he got the W.

odd comparison except for the warrior mentality bit...besides wandy made his reputation in pride not the ufc.
