I posted this thread in the General Forum, but wanna get your feedback, as well. Been thinkin about this for awhile and wonderin' if it could be a money-maker: Would die-hard fight fans pay to see state-of-the-art computer-graphic match-ups on a giant IMAX screen of legends that posters have long-pitted against each other -- and heatedly argued about -- in mythical match-ups (in every weight class)? e.g. Marciano, Louis, Jeffries, Liston, Dempsey, Jack Johnson, the great John L, Greb, Salvidor Sanchez, Benny Leonard, Robinson, Pep, and on and on. Not only could it be light-years more life-like than Madden Football,(feeding in every imaginable piece of information, and using the best voice actors) it could include all the 24/7 pre-fight hype, final press conferences (with explosions) and interviews with fight greats from every era offering predictions, e.g John L or Daniel Mendoza picking the winner of Graziano vs. LaMotta. On each card, there'd be three 15-round championship bouts. Four shows a year. If you'd go, what would you be willing to pay?
If it becomes a real thing, who'd ya like to see against each other? Let's hear from you DPL; you're a terrific matchmaker.
Interesting and flat out fun concept. Who would your boxing brain trusts be to figure out the winners and variables in the match-ups. I'll write a script or two for ya! What you willing to pay? haha. Addendum: Your Heavyweight match-ups would be teh top drawers IMO. Murray Woroner had it right.
Excellent question, d. Don't know at this point, but I'll ask (along with tons of other questions) when I'm next contacted by the producer, who recently asked me to write it.
Appreciate your candor, OF, but what about the blockbuster success of recent computer-graphic releases, IRON MAN, WALL.E, TOY STORY, and KUNG FU PANDA?
I would with these conditions: 1. The effects better exceed those in "The Incredible Hulk". I think that video boxing games that depict real fighters still stink. And they'd stink to anyone who knows the real fighters like the back of their hands. 2. Historians and old heads must be on the payroll to ensure accuracy of personality, style, cornermen, physique, etc. 3. No goofy Hollywood style one-liners. Again, if entertainment agents have influence on what is scripted, then flush it. They'd ruin it completely. 4. JG, Stonehands and a few more hand-picked CLASSIC posters reserve the right to review these with "red pen power" to ensure accuracy and good sense. Haha. 5. Oh, I'd ice the idea of John L. offering predictions on Graziano. That would make it look like something out of Twilight Zone. It should be as realistic as possible even given the circumstances and hokiness must be avoided at all costs. I'd pay up to $100 if done right.
I've mentioned this before, d: some of your mythical match-ups have been inspired. I'd welcome recommendations and run them by the team.
I agree here...except for the $100 (cough). Realism would do it for me...Hokiness is out. Make it something rich with the personalities of the fighters involved and interwoven with the fight. You've got a literal TON of great storylines to work with from history. Facinating personal storylines like how Robinson never really liked to fight, Dempsey describing how the hobo jungles made him a vicious fighter, Frazier's "Philadelphia" determination, on and on....There are no personalities in sports that compare with the fight crowd. Work that angle IMO.
I might fork over 5-10 dollars, like for any other movie. If we were talking really realistic CGI style stuff that made it look so that one could almost think he was actually watching a real boxing match, maybe up to $15. I never buy Pay-Per-Views, either; I feel like I'm almost throwing money down the toilet when I pay noticeable sums for items of purely aesthetic value.
