Hi there. I'm a 15 year old from a South Asian country, turning 16 just this August. I've really wanted to box for over a year but my parents won't address my interest in boxing at all (they'll just outright not respond when I tell them I want to join a gym or say that I'll get knocked out by someone stronger). I'm going to study real hard this coming school year and get really good marks so that my parents will let me box however the exams aren't coming until a couple of months. What can I do in the mean time, at home, possibly to help me train in the future?
tell them that doing sports is good for health. You need stamina to study hard, to keep your concentration on high levels all the time.
I've told them but they just won't have it. They want me to play football and basketball instead but obviously I have no interest in them. Since they're really hell-bent on not changing their opinion, what can I do until I can change their opinion (with good performance in school) in a couple of months? Should I exercise or practice some moves myself, etc. Thanks for the help by the way.
It seems they're more worried about you getting hurt. I can't see good grades changing their minds. Just do some general conditioning, running, rowing, cycling etc mix in a few bodyweight exercises and mobility work. Do not do what is generally suggested and do anything to do with punching. Punching on your own without someone with a clue watching and correcting your form will engrain poor technique which will take a very long time to overcome once/if you start boxing.
Professionals in business that had some combined athleticism tended to be way more successful than their counterparts. There's a chance you can get hurt doing anything, that doesn't mean it should keep you from doing it if you truly want. Also comes a point where you have to say 'I'm gonna do this no matter what, I just wanted your support. ' In the mean time, start running and using body weight move-ups like classic pushups and situps to start developing a base. Edit: Also.. they want you to play Football, a sport with a horrible amount of concussions and a skill that doesn't translate to anything other than being a used car salesmen or breaking your back over manual labor. Boxing is not only a talent to defend yourself but the more passionate you are, you can start to teach others and get paid for it.
Just wait my G. If you can wait a few years and still be as interested in it as you are now then you'll now that you really want to do it and that it's not just a phase you're going through. It's better to start when you're more physically mature anyway. You'll have greater longevity in the sport. Artur Beterbiev didn't turn pro until he was something like 28 years old. Tiger Flowers (my profile pic) had most of his fights past the age of 30 and he took Greb to his brink more than once! Ray Mercer didn't even start boxing until he was like 23. Don't listen to people who say you have to be young to be successful because that is total bs. It's all about how you maintain your body.
Thank you, all, very much for your responses. I appreciate you giving me your time to respond on this thread and cannot thank you enough. I guess I'll do basic conditioning for now then. Thanks all, again. Soccer.
