Hi how are you doing just wanted to ask people that are currently learning or have mastered the art of Jiu Jitsu, how hard is it to learn, what was it like starting out, what to expect and how long did it take for you to be good at it

i'm 21 now how many years do you think it will likely take until i'm very good at it ?

It's easy to learn it just takes practice and a good school. It takes approximately six months to learn how to defend submissions and about one year to learn how to properly attack. After that you get better and better as each year passes. If you're interested, then research the schools in your area and then pick one to do a free class. If you like it - start going.

I'm more interested in just being able to defend and escape than attacking, i've seen people in positions and just being completely helpless from getting out, and that scare's me to be honest.

how hard is it to master takedown and submission's and postioning defense ?

You can grasp all the basics you need in six months but mastering them is up to you. That's a lifetime of work and dedication subjective to the individual's will and effort.

This is a question that has a million answers. But if you are looking for an approximate answer then about 2-3 years to get a blue belt, another 2-3 for purple, then the same again for brown and then black.

BJJ does not really spend that much time on takedowns. If you want to play guard then pull guard... Simples.

Rusty and Primate are the BJJ guys here... They will help you out.

good is a subjective term. for example i can crush almost everyone in my gym but my instructor can crush me and his instructor can crush him and so on. thats the way it is.
the best quote is that black belts are just white belts that kept turning up. thats all there is to it. its simply impossible not to progress.

    good luck with your training.

thanks for advice, I appreciate it :good

I know it depends on the person, but what I mean by good is,

how many years do you believe from your own experiances, will it take for me to at least be able to hold my own with experianced talented Jiu Jitsu artists in terms of defending and escapes.

    just a rough guess ?

Jui Jitsu is USELESS. it's for non blacks who cant box because they lack the athleticism.

like i said its so subjective but at an educated guess, training 3 times a week id say 8-10 years should see you lasting a 5 minute session with a brown belt which is around where you start to consider someone a "good" player

    How experienced and how talented?

My coach is an experienced and talented BJJ artist, he's a brown belt with 20 years experience. To hold your own with him you'll need a good 10-15 years of dedicated training.

I've recently started training in Judo, and when we roll I can pretty much spank anything up to a brown belt, and even then it's only the big guys that give me much trouble. I'm a blue belt with 5 years experience, so to them I'm probably an experienced and talented BJJ artist.

It's a very subjective art and one of few where time on the mats and humility in your training makes more difference than virtually anything else

look at mma and notice that once athletics blacks came in the sport they dominated. jon jones, anderson silva, etc

why do you think most boxing champs are black? and not white? asian?
