I had 2 brothers, who were both well-known, established boxers, by the time I started my own career. I naturally wanted to be like them, but in my pro debut I was thrown in with a future HOFer... who had more than 100 bouts under his belt - and, not surprisingly, I was ko'd in the 1st round! Who am I?
Dan Sullivan, who was KO'ed in the 1st round by Harry Lewis. Dan is a brother of Jack Sullivan and former World Champion Mike Sullivan.
Yes, you would of course know that! By the way, hh... I see, that Paul Berlenbach's IBHOF profile now has been corrected:good(but at BoxRec they still haven't seen the light!).
Ed Brophy called me up on this and told me that it would be changed. I will contact BoxRec once again to see if I can get them to change it as well. Thanks!! Tonight I will be going to the Adamek fight in Newark. They gave me about 30 ticket vouchers for $53 seats at a cost of $20 each.
They made the change on BoxRec: Paul Berlenbach was born a deaf-mute to French and German parents. When he was 18, while working as an instructor at a Westchester County institution for deaf-mutes, he went to the aid of a boy whose kite had become entangled in an electric wire 12 feet above the ground. Climbing a pole, he released the kite, but came in contact with the wire, received a shock, and fell to the ground. Those who came to his rescue feared him dead. First aid revived him. When he came to, he immediately found that he now had normal hearing. Subsequent treatment developed his speech. He started as a wrestler but soon tired of grappling and became a boxer, winning 13 knockouts and three decisions as an amateur, earning an amateur boxing championship as well. After his boxing career ended, he went back to wrestling for awhile. He had first retired from boxing to enter the lumber business.
HHascup is the Joe Louis of these boxing trivia question threads! The questions are a sort of "bum of the month club" for him...
