While I definitely do not think everyone will be secretly rooting for Hopkins, I do think there are a lot of people who have a soft spot for underdogs and aging athletes defying the odds. Of course, Hopkins has both of those possible angles on his side going in, so he may win over a few more than usual.
Maybe i overstated that a bit. I dont think anyone would really be upset if Hopkins won...at least not any rational fan of the sport. As you said, most have a soft spot for underdogs. Combine that with his age and his continuing to make history.....how can you not root for him? Funny thing is i dont even particularly like Hopkins, i just cant help cheering him against the odds. The guy is a once in a lifetime marvel.
Im just amazed we can talk about a guy who is darn near 50, and whether or not he can beat the biggest baddest guy at 175.... Its insane.
Fighters that Bernard Hopkins is older than. Mike Tyson Lennox Lewis Andrew Golota Chris Eubank etc Feel free to add to the list.
The Alien Unindentified Driving Object is still at full speed I see! All aboard! free Martian Red Dustwine for everyone!
Funny to think Tyson was biggest attraction in boxing trough late 80's and was past his prime after the prison mid 90's.now 20years later B-Hop is still kicking ass And add that Hopkins was in prison when Iron Mike was the HW champ, quite unique careers both have.and total opposite to each others. I have nothing but mad respect for Hopkins.to me he is one of the true GOAT's of this sport and shows how far dedication will take you.i bet Hopkins is one man who can go safely to Philly prison and nobody i mean nobody would try anything.he must be god to most of the prisoners. You don't have to like Hopkins, but you have to respect the man.yes he is ex con but hardly many point out how the man changed his life completely.and even lost his first pro fight.he is more than just boxing.
It's a bit of both for me. If Hopkins can pull it off it will be a truly amazing achievement, OTOH for better or for worse whilst Hopkins is already a legend (and a win could simply be taken as further tribute to his uniqueness) I'd have to be worried for the state of the division if one of it's top representatives is unable to beat a guy nearly 20 years his senior.
How can anyone be rooting for that boring ,racist cheat? He was rolling the floor and crying like a ***** against calslappy , did same thing against dawson , he constantly puching bellow the belt , headbutting and clinching ,he's a disgrace .
When the Slappites start saying Calzaghe is better than Hopkins all you have to do isa look what they are doing today.... Hopkins ... ready to take on the most feared puncher in boxing today even though he is almost 50 yrs old Calzaghe... "retired" to avoid a rematch with Nard at home in Wales. Ran to a life of sniffing coke alcohol abuse chasing nasty ho's & hunting & killing little baby rabbits Yep Calzaghe isn't fit to carry Nards jockstrap
Calzaghe still deserves credit. I scored the bout 114-113 Hopkins, but Calzaghe proved his worth in my eyes that evening. Even though I had Hopkins edging Joe out, the thing that always sticks with me about that fight is that I had never seen anyone outhustle Bernard like that over the championship rounds. Bernard typically finishes fights strong, including both Taylor losses and the early RJJ loss. To be able to outwork him down the final stretch, even at Hopkins already advanced age way back then, was an impressive feat any way you slice it.
