On an off note, you can't sign a forward contract that far ahead of time with only one signature.

Perhaps HBO included language that gives them the right to choose an opponent and Kovalev is therefore included under that umbrella, but you can't specifically say "You must face Kovalev by the third fight". Those are negotiations that would need to happen between Kovalev's team and Ward's. They can't be done between Andre and the network alone.

So, yes, there's going to be a negotiating process that has to happen to iron details out before Ward-Kovalev can come off. That fight is NOT set in stone.

 

I think the point he was making was that people wouldn't have accepted GGG signing a three fight contract with the third fight being Ward, keeping Andre hanging around. They wanted him to move straight up to face a pound for pound talent in his first fight at the weight.

This is something Ward has - quite sensibly IMO - refused to do.
