I wanted to know apparently ward is scared of flying thats his excuse for not fighting abroad. So how did he manage to to get the athens to win the gold?

You wont get a good response, they will let this thread sink away and pretend it doesnt exist.

I'll answer, although I am not a Ward or Dirrell fan. They are fighting guys who are considered the world's best at an early age. Ward thoroughly dominated the guy who was the heavy favorite going into the tourney. The most important thing, he is young, in his 20th pro fight, but despite that he has already taken on "the best" the division had to offer. (Same goes for Dirrell with Froch and AA).
Add to the fact that he won the gold medal, and the obvious talent when you watch him fight, he is bound to get hyped.

That being said, I'm not so sure that he has achieved #1 or #2 status in the division based on his accomplishments. But, the division while obviously deep, has no one whose accomplishments stand out, although there are several stand out fighters.

Now if Ward had lost to Kessler, you would not be hearing of his hype or his meteoric rise. he would just be a young fighter who they would have said wasn't ready for the step up in comp or the big stage(as they did with Dirrell in the Froch fight, although he was clearly the more skilled fighter)

As for the double standard theory.... I don't know, maybe you are right. But, I think some of the attitude from US fans comes from the idea that many(right or wrong) European fighters are considered "protected" and generally fight inferior competition until they reach the world stage. It is only then we find out whether they sink or swim. This is a generalization, and is obviously subject for debate.

I do think that some European fighters get slagged(as you guys say it) too much for little or no reason, but some also get hyped and trumped up far beyond their merits.

PS- I've never heard anything about Ward being afraid to fly. Not saying it ain't so, but this is the 1st I'm hearing of it.

Very well thought out post and i can see a lot of sense in what you say but
although i agree they are fighting the best, but so are all 6 of the fighters in the tourney, yet only 2 get credit for it. All of them want to fight at home yet only one gets a pass for wanting it, while others get blasted to helll for wanting it,

He doesn't get a pass from me. But, I will say this..... all the other fighters would have done it if they could. Also, I'm starting to get the impression that this tourney was not particularly well thought out. I think Ward's promoters saw the opening and took it.

Oh agreed, im not getting at or blaming Ward at all, he did what any of them would have. Its the fans on here with double standards im questioning. Ward himself is just being oppertunistic

Yeah I was thinking that today while I watched Ep.6 of Fight Camp 360 for the first time.

Don't worry about them they're butthurt. To be honest, maybe Ward should've got a warning but I saw about 3. For people to say something like 7 just shows that they are making it up. Ward beat him...badly. Deal with it people.

Gold medals don't mean nothing in pro boxing, they're won in AMA's and pro's and AMA's are two different playing fields. Congrats to those who even get in tournaments let alone win awards and medals but they don't mean too much once you turn pro. The most important thing I think one would gain while turning from amateur to pro is experience.

I think its jacked up that Ward gets the home court advantage through the whole tourney ..That's one hell of a job by his promoter to convince not only showtime but the rest of the promoters to agree with that ..

seems like he gets the red carpet no warnings in the first fight on butts along with turf advantage then he gets the softy in green at home does he get the 3rd fight in oakland

plus his involvement with voctor conte unless green upsets him hes automaticlly in the final 4

i think he is over rated big time he has one very good win we havent seen his follow up performance

he is picked to win the evenly matched tourney with ease and go on to beat bute with ease

every one else in the tourney is 1-1 and everybody at home won so its funny to see ward is 1-0 if he follows the trend he should be 1-1 like everyone else but wait he is at home and that could make him 2-0 strange how the trends go.

I just wanna see ward outside his comfort zone of oakland in a fight that does not have controversy before i rate him like most do

I think you're misreading my post. I didn't say he deserves to fight at home because he won the gold medal. What I said was there are a lot of people who think Ward would not be successful if he fought abroad, and I argue he would based on that previous experience. Granted, it is the amateurs but its amateur boxing on its highest stage. As for the Ward-Kessler debate, there are several boxing columnists and experts who scored that fight 10-1 or 11-0 Ward. It was a brutal beating that could have taken place anywhere. Ward is just a bad matchup stylistically for Kessler. I really do like Kessler and was rooting for him against Froch. It just wasn't his night against Ward.

I dont doubt he could perform fighting away from home, its just the fact he refuses to and DOESNT get flamed for it , while Froch and AA ect get flamed like mad for not manning up and fighting away. And they just after a 2nd fight at home where as Ward at this rate will have all his at Home.Remeber people are not annoyed at Ward himself, its the fans who use double standards that annoy people.
