First, let's not kid ourselves-- few of us have ever seen a fighter absorb a flush shot mid punch and still deliver his own shot with such concussive power that he not only floors his opponent but seperates him from his senses. GGG did exactly that to a very capable middleweight last night. Let's also not pretend that there is a middleweight campaigning today that could beat him. Nevertheless I am even more convinced after last night that Ward would beat him at 168. GGG, for all of his boxing skill (and he is as technically sound as the come) and absurd power, is rather slow. Geale, who is no SOG defensively, made him miss frequently yet lacked the ability to transition from offense to defense quickly enough to counter GGG and make him pay. Ward, on the other hand, is slippery as f*ck--no one manipulates distance any better--and has the hand speed, footwork, and accuracy to punish you when you miss. I can see Ward countering GGG all night. Similarly GGG is there to be hit. Indeed the moment before the KO he caught a FLUSH shot. Everyone gets hit, but he catches too many flush shots (remember Stevens fight) for my liking in a hypothetical match-up with Ward. If C level Curtis Stevens can find a home for his power punches, does anyone doubt that an accurate, fleet of foot, and fasthanded Ward would not?
all i seen tonight was GGG has problems when he is in the middle of the ring trying to find his opponent. Ward will not linger on the ropes nor move straight back like Geale. Ward beats GGG with timing distance easy maybe even by KO. I like GGG but really he needs to stup up in weight already to fight tops guys like ward, chavez, froch ect. amazing fights. if hes soo good why not?
Ward: clinch, headbutt, hit while holding, run, hit off the break, repeat. With a fair ref who stops him from fouling, Ward would be easily beaten.
Ward maybe - but the guy needs to get his ass back in the ring. Froch vs GGG would be a war I wouldn't miss for my daughters wedding. That's about it.
