Well, he did a million views against Sullivan Barrera, but that had an undercard fight and an opponent who seemed somewhat competitive. Ward-Brand had no undercard fight and an over-matched opponent and did around 750k.
I genuinely hope you're right. I'll take no joy if it doesn't come off- this is a fight boxing needs, and I'd be happy to see Andre get his career back on track. Itskowitch leaving Roc when he did was my first warning sign that things may not come through. That the guy calling the shots left before this fight was a bad signal IMO. This is another, combined with HBO's shoddy, half hearted buildup..hopefully something feasible gets worked out...but my confidence level of it coming off is much lower than it was a few months ago.
I wonder if HBO did not put too much in because they weren't sure it would happen. It would be nice to see Wards career come together but unfortunately the only one preventing it from doing so is Ward. He has made bad decision after bad decision meanwhile acting like a diva through most of it. He should of focused on fighting top quality opponents instead of suing his management over and over again because he kept losing the lawsuits. It wasted time and his prime. Theres a podcast out there where Ward states that he believes there is a conspiracy to keep from being a success. The man is crazy and is wasting his talent and skills.
1. Ward isn't very much of a draw 2. HBO doesn't give a push to Andre (due to his perceived "negative" style) 3. Ward was fighting a walkover opponent Of course the fight isn't going to garner outstanding ratings. HBO wants to sell blood and guts warriors (with limited talent), This is pretty much the antithesis of Ward. If Ward wasn't an employee, I seriously doubt he'd get any air time on Home Box Office at all.
In a financial sense, GGG is the A side. I'm not a GGG fan, it's just common sense. Ward is 100% more accomplished.
Ward isn't a draw. Fat Dan also said over half of the tickets for the fight were given away for free.
